255. French Pensions paid to English Subjects.
The following sums of money were paid on the 1st of May 1517 to the following persons, as half-yearly instalments of their pensions from the King of France :—

256. Charles, King Of Spain, to All Persons.
Wanted money for his journey to Spain and for other purposes. Begged the King of England to lend him 100,000 gold florins. The King of England has promised to lend him, on good security, the 100,000 gold florins, or their equivalent of 40,000 English gold nobles.
Binds himself to repay the King of England the 100,000 gold florins within three years, viz., 30,000 gold florins in each of the two first years, and the remainder in the third year.
Pledges his person, his successors and subjects, and all their property for the repayment of his debt to the King of England.—Middelburgh, in the county of Zealand, the 18th of July 1517.

257. Charles, King Of Spain, &c., to Fray Bernardino De Mesa, Bishop Of Elna, and Johannes De Le Sauch, his Private Secretary.
Henry, King of England, has promised to lend him 40,000 English gold nobles, viz., 20,000 at once, and the remaining 20,000, payable in Bruges or Antwerp by Leonard Frescobaldi, within two months.
Binds himself to repay his debt of 40,000 gold nobles to the King of England within three years.
Commissions Fray Bernardino de Mesa, Bishop of Elna, and ambassador in England, and Johannes de le Sauch, his private secretary, to receive in his name the payment of the first instalment, amounting to 20,000 English gold nobles.—Middelburgh, in the county of Zealand, the 18th of July 1517.

Philip Of Cleves, Seigneur De Ravenstein ; Charles De Croy, Prince Of Chimay ; Henry, Count Of Nassau, and Seigneur De Breda ; Guillaume De Croy, Seigneur De Chièvres ; Johannes De Sauvaige, Seigneur De Descanbelze, Chancellor ; Anthonius De Lalain, Seigneur De Montigny, Treasurer of the King Of Spain, to All Persons.
His Catholic Majesty has bound himself, with their knowledge and consent, to repay in London to Henry, King of England, the sum of 100,000 gold florins, being the equivalent of 40,000 English gold nobles which have been lent by the King of England to his Catholic Majesty, who was much in want of money, especially for his journey to Spain. This sum of money is to be repaid within three years after being granted, viz., 30,000 florins in each of the two first years, and 40,000 florins in the third year.
Pledge themselves and all their property to the King of England for the punctual repayment of the 100,000 crowns. —Middelburgh, county of Zealand, the 18th of July 1517.

259. Charles, King Of Spain, to All Persons.
Henry, King of England, on a former occasion, sent the Archduchess Margaret, his aunt, who was at that time governor of his estates, a certain number of auxiliary troops against the rebels of Gueldres, and especially of the town of Venloo. As the Archduchess had no money to pay the troops, the King of England lent her 35,000 scudos. Binds himself to repay the said 35,000 scudos, in instalments of 10,000 scudos a year. The repayment of this debt is to begin as soon as the other debt of 40,000 gold nobles is paid.—Middelburgh the 22nd of July 1517.

260. Charles, King Of Spain, to All Persons.
The King of England has promised to lend him 40,000 gold nobles ; 20,000 in ready money, and 20,000 gold nobles in drafts on the bank of Frescobaldi in Antwerp and in Bruges. Has promised the King of England that the knights of his order of the Toison d'Or and his chancellor shall give the King securities in due form. As he is undertaking a long journey, his chancellor cannot easily despatch these securities. Orders, therefore, that a special chancellor be nominated for this purpose, who is to despatch the documents in question for the King of England as soon as the drafts on Frescobaldi are delivered.—Middelburgh, the 24th of July, 1517.

The King of England has lent him 40,000 angel nobles, which, according to the treaty concluded between them, he is bound to repay in English money, or in crowns ad solem. Binds himself to repay the 40,000 nobles in English, and in no other kind of money.—Middelburgh, the 21st of August 1517.
