1516

1516. 15 July.
H. H. u. St. A. England 2.
Charles, King Of Castile, to Bernardino De Mesa.
Confiding in the ability and loyalty of Pedro de Quintana, we have ordered him to continue to serve us in the same capacity in which he served the late Catholic king, and entrusted to him the same negotiations of which he has previously been in charge. Therefore, send to him henceforward all letters and enclosures, and keep in communication with him in all matters touching our royal service, just as you did in the lifetime of the late King Ferdinand. And since the cipher in which you are now writing, although reasonable, is not very safe, and might be deciphered if several letters in it were intercepted, we charge you, for the greater security of anything you may have to write in cipher henceforward, to make use of the cipher alphabet recently sent you from Spain by his late Catholic majesty.
Brussels, 15 July, 1516.
Signed, Yo el Rey. Spanish.
