Miscellaneous 1572

[A. D. 1572, June.] 751. Advertisements from Flanders.
Letters from Spain of last month state that the Duke of Medina Celi was departed with 47 sail of ships, in which were 7,500 soldiers besides mariners, and 400 chests of silver, 18 chests of gold and 18,000 pockets of wool.
There is come to Flanders from Spain Don John de Mendoza, who has been Maestro de Campo and general in Italy and elsewhere. “He must be general of the horsemen with the Duke of Alva, which is the room the Prior had, the Duke's base son, who is now vice-roy of Catalonia.”
Don Guerau d'Espes (Geram Dispese), having received letters from King Philip to go into Spain, left Brussels on the 10th of May.
It was written from Bruges (Breggis) on the 6th of this month of June that the Duke of Alva, by the 25th, will have ready 200 ensigns of foot, Burgundians, Almains and Spaniards, 12,000 horsemen and 100 pieces of ordnance to “defend” (sic) the Prince of Orange and those that take his part.
The King of Spain has in readiness in the islands of Italy 9,000 Almains, 14,000 Italians and 12,000 Spaniards, “besides those that go in the league with the Pope and Venetian army. It is supposed they shall go to Argell or to Marseilles. It is reckoned that with the money already remitted from Spain to Flanders, the Duke of Medina hath above 2,200,000 ducats.
The Marquis Vitello is appointed to go with an army against the Brill, and the Duke's son, Don “Fetherreck” with another army to Flushing; and the Duke of “Astote” [apparently Holstein. See “Corr: de Cardinal de Granvelle,” iv. 356, n. 1.] is made general to go to Mons in Hainault (Henego).
