Mandate —the pope having learned that the Cistercian abbey of St. Mary, Kilbeggan (de Flumine dei), in the diocese of Meath, is void by the death of Gilbert Macmulchallan, and that Kenanus Ofeargail, monk thereof, took violent possession, without papal or ordinary authority, but relying only on lay power, and has detained it for more than two years—to make provision of the said abbey, value not exceeding 20 marks, to Maurice Oscray, monk thereof, if found fit, summoning and removing the said Kenanus, whom Maurice cannot safely meet within the city or diocese of Meath; and to grant that he may be blessed by any catholic bishop, who shall receive and send his oath of fealty to the pope as usual. CLXXI. … Another flyleaf has, in contemporary hands, ‘Lubbertus rubricauit 1431, xxi Septembris’ and ‘Primus de vacaturis, de provisionibus prelatorum, de litteris dominorum cardinalium, de fructibus percipiendis, de tabellionatus officio et litteris dimissorialibus Anno xiii Martini pape quinti et alique littere dimissoriales de Anno xii.’ A contemporary description similar to this latter ‘Primus …’, occurs-on the bottom edge of the volume.
  • 2. In the concurrent letters the scribe hesitates between ‘Apulbi’ and ‘Apulvi.’
  • 3. Oxoniensis diocesis. In the oath he is described merely as clericus Oxoniensis, so that he is a clerk of Oxford, or of Exeter, or of the diocese of Exeter.
  • 4. in regno Anglie, substituted in the margin for in civitate Wygorniensi, which is cancelled with the note: cassatum et correctum de mandato domini G[eraldi] episcopi Conser[a]nensis, An. de Adria.
