1423. Kal. Jan. St. Peter's, Rome (f. 11.)	To Thomas Bekynton, rector of Sutton Courtenay in the diocese of Salisbury, D.C.L. Dispensation to him (who is chancellor of Humphrey, duke of Gloucester, and holds, besides Sutton Courtenay, value not exceeding 60 marks, the canonry and prebend of Morehall in Gnowsale in the diocese of Lichfield, value not exceeding 10 marks) to hold for life any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible with Sutton Courtenay, even if it be a parish church etc., and to resign both, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. 1422. 16 Kal. Jan. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 14d.)	Relaxation of two years and two quarantines of enjoined penance to penitents who on the feast of St. Ronan visit and give alms for the repair or fabric of the parish church of St. Ronan de Land in the diocese of Dromore, whose buildings are much collapsed. Univ. etc. Licet is.
1423. Kal. Jan. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 14d.)	To John Ykynean, rector of St. Mary's, Lochseudi, in the diocese of Meath. Absolution etc., at his recent petition containing that after receiving papal dispensation, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure he, by virtue thereof, obtained the rectory of Magmora in the diocese of Meath, and that, resigning Magmora to the ordinary he, without having any other dispensation, obtained by authority of the ordinary St. Mary's, on its voidance by the death of John Ykathasayd; and adding that before obtaining St. Mary's, and in order to do so, he promised to pay to a certain priest, who had no right in St. Mary's, a yearly pension, and to a certain layman of those parts a sum of money, in order that they might favour him and defend him against his adversaries, and also promised to make a present to a certain other person. The pope absolves him from sentences and pains incurred, rehabilitates him, grants that the collation and provision made to him by authority of the ordinary shall hold good from the present date in whatsoever way St. Mary's, whose value does not exceed 40 marks, became void. 2 Non. Jan. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 17.)	To William de Glendonwyne, rector of Glencarne in the diocese of Glasgow, licentiate of civil law. Dispensation to him (who is licentiate of civil law by examination, M.A., and bachelor of canon law, and is of noble birth, and holds besides Glencarne, value not exceeding 40l. sterling, canonries and prebends of Glasgow, Aberdeen and Tours, value altogether not exceeding 80l. sterling) to hold for life together with the said church any other benefice with cure etc., as above, f. 11, mutatis mutandis. 14 Kal. Feb. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 45.)	To Patrick de Wardlau, perpetual vicar of Wardlau in the diocese of Moray. Dispensation to him (who formerly received papal dispensation, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted etc. as above, f. 14d, after which he was so promoted and obtained the above vicarage, value not exceeding 10 marks sterling, and who is chaplain to Alexander, earl of Mar) to hold, at his own petition and that of the said earl, five other mutually compatible benefices with and without cure. Dispensation to him (who formerly received papal dispensation, as in the preceding, after which he was made a clerk) to hold, at his own petition and that of Alexander, earl of Mar, whose cousin he is, any mutually compatible benefices, of any number and kind, with or without cure. Relaxation, during ten years, of one year and forty days of enjoined penance to penitents who on the principal feasts and octaves, as usual, and the six days of Whitsun week, and of a hundred days to those who during the said octaves and days visit and give alms for the sustentation and repair of the chapel of the poor hospital of St. Mary the Virgin, Rouncevall (de Ranciuallis) in the diocese of London, whose buildings are in need of no small repair. 6 Kal. April. St. Peter s, Rome. (f. 65d.)	To John Elwalde, rector of Kyrkandres in the diocese of Whitehern, licentiate of theology. Grant as below. Lately the pope ordered provision to be made to him of a canonry with reservation of a prebend and dignity etc. of Glasgow and of a benefice with or without cure in the gift of the bishop and the prior and chapter of St. Andrews, and dispensed him to hold for five years such dignity etc. together with the perpetual vicarage, which he then held, of Selkyrke Regis in the diocese of Glasgow, or with such benefice with cure. His recent petition contained that he obtained the parish church of Markyniche (sic) in the diocese of St. Andrews by virtue of the said provision, held it for more than a year with the above vicarage, resigned both, and obtained Kyrkandres. In order that he may not be deprived of the effect of the above provision as far as regards a dignity etc. the pope grants to him (who is M.A., still holds Kyrkandres, and also holds in commendam by authority of the ordinary Markeniche (sic), value not exceeding 30 and 20 marks sterling respectively) that the letters of provision shall hold good from the present date as far as regards such dignity etc. Litterarum etc. (Ja. xxxv. Mandate to dispense Archibald de Douglas, donsel, and Eufemia de Graham, damsel, of the dioceses of Glasgow and Dunblane, to marry notwithstanding that they are related in the double third degree of kindred on one side and the double fourth on another, arising from divers stocks. Relaxation, during ten years, of five years and five quarantines of enjoined penance to penitents who on Passion Sunday or one of the two following days visit and give alms for the building and conservation of the chapel of St. Mary Magdalen which the late Henry, king of England, began to found and build in the place called ‘Batelfelde’ in the diocese of Lichfield, where very many died in battle and were buried. 7 Id. March. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 82d.)	To John Stafford, archdeacon of Salisbury, D.C.L. Dispensation as below. His recent petition contained that he formerly received papal dispensation, as the son of an unmarried man and an unmarried woman (i) to be promoted etc. as above, f. 14d, (ii) after having been made a subdeacon and obtained a certain perpetual benefice called a portion in the church of St. Teath (Tecla) in the diocese of Exeter (Oxonien.), to hold any mutually compatible benefices, of any number and kind, with or without cure, and to resign them, for exchange or otherwise, (iii) after he had obtained the archdeaconry of Salisbury, a non-major dignity, value not exceeding 120 marks, and the canonry and prebend of Barton in Wells, value not exceeding 20, and a canonry and prebend of Exeter (Oxonien.), value not exceeding 6 marks, to hold for life two, and during five years a third, benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible with one another, and to resign such incompatible benefices, for exchange or otherwise, by virtue of which last dispensation he has obtained two benefices with cure [names etc. not given]. At his said petition the pope dispenses him, who is keeper of king Henry's secret seal, to have in choirs and chapters etc. voice, place and capacity to elect, propose etc., as if he were of lawful birth, and to be able to be elected and appointed to, and to receive, all pontifical dignities and honours, with further grant that in future privileges and graces impetrated from the apostolic see no mention of his said illegitimacy and dispensation need be made. 1422. 2 Non. Dec. S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 84d.)	To William Derby, rector of Turygton in the diocese of Norwich. Dispensation to him, who hold, besides the said church, value not exceeding 100 marks, a canonry and prebend of Wells, value not exceeding 10, at his own petition and that of John, bishop of Ely, whose treasurer he is, to hold for life with Turygton any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if another parish church etc., and to resign both, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. 1423. 8 Kal. March. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 97.)	To Malcolm (Macolmo) Johannis, clerk, of the diocese of Dunblane. Rehabilitation as below. Formerly he obtained (after having received papal dispensation, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold two benefices, even if one had cure and were in a cathedral church) the perpetual vicarage of Kyppan in the diocese of Dunblane. Subsequently, on the voidance of the canonry and prebend of Kyppan in Dunblane, Robert, duke of Albany, their lay patron, presented Malcolm to bishop William, who instituted him, and, without having obtained any other dispensation, Malcolm, under pretext of the said presentation and institution, took possession of the canonry and prebend and, having resigned the said vicarage, still detains them. He is rehabilitated, and is to resign. Sedes apostolica, pia mater.
8 Kal. March. St. Peter's, Rome (f. 97.)	To the abbot of Balmurinach in the diocese of St. Andrews. Mandate, recapitulating the preceding, to collate and assign to the above Malcolm, upon his resigning, the above canonry and prebend, value not exceeding 20l. sterling, whether they became void as above, or by the resignation of John Roleris, or otherwise. Rehabilitation on account of his having (after having received papal dispensation, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman related in the fourth and fourth degrees of kindred, to be promoted etc. as above, f. 14d, and having obtained by authority of the ordinary the perpetual vicarage of Kylyle in the above diocese) held the said vicarage, which he has since resigned, for more than four years without having himself ordained priest, and without dispensation. Dispensation to him (who formerly received papal dispensation, as the son of an unmarried man and an unmarried woman, to be promoted etc. as in the preceding, and subsequently, after he had been promoted to all minor orders, to hold one other compatible benefice, and to resign both, simply or for exchange, once only; and who is the secretary of Thomas (sic), bishop of Caithness) to hold one other benefice with or without cure, compatible with the above others, and to resign it and the said others simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. Faculty for him, to whom the pope has made provision of the said see, to be consecrated by any catholic bishop, assisted by two or three like bishops. Relaxation, during ten years, of four years and four quarantines of enjoined penance to penitents who on the principal feasts of the year, the octaves of certain of them and the six days of Whitsun week, visit and give alms for the repair of the church of the Augustinian monastery of St. Mary, Trym, in the diocese of Meath, in which by the merits of the same Virgin the Lord works many miracles. Mandate at the information of Thomas Leison, clerk, of the diocese of St. Davids (to the effect that John ap Moryc, priest, rector of Lannedy in the diocese of St. Davids, promised to pay to Geoffrey ap Nicolas, donsel, 10l. and to two laymen of the said diocese, the patrons of the said church, 100s. and 20s. sterling respectively, on condition that Geoffrey should, the said church being void by the death of David, procure its collation to him or his presentation to it etc., and that the said patrons should present him and no other; that, presented by the said patrons to bishop Benedict, and instituted thereby, by his ordinary authority, he obtained and has held possession for more than a year), if Thomas will accuse John, to summon John and others concerned, and if he find the above to be true, to declare the said presentation, institution and obtaining possession to have been and to be null, and to remove John, and in the event of his doing so, to collate and assign the said church, value not exceeding 10 marks sterling, to Thomas. Dispensation to him (who is also M.A., is of baronial race, and is chancellor of the university of Cambridge, holds the above archdeaconry, a non-major dignity, the canonries and prebends of Aylesbery in Lincoln, Grendone in York, and Hundesacre in Lichfield, and the rectorship without cure called the mastership of the hospital of St. Leonard, York, value not exceeding 200, 60, 30, 20, and 150 marks respectively) to hold for life together with the said archdeaconry two other benefices with or without cure or otherwise incompatible with one another, and to resign them simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, and hold instead three incompatible benefices. Mandate to dispense to marry Herbert de Almar, donsel, of his diocese, and Grany Nyergayll (sic), damsel, of the diocese of Ardagh, who is living in the diocese of Meath, who formerly committed fornication with one another and had offspring, not being ignorant that they were related in the second and third and likewise in the double third and also the fourth degrees of affinity, because Herbert committed fornication with a woman who was related to Grany in the second and third degrees of kindred, and with another who was related to her in the double third, and with another who was related to her in the fourth degrees; and also that they were related in the triple fourth degree of kindred arising from divers stocks. Offspring, past and future, is to be decreed legitimate. Oblate nobis.

Dispensation to him (who is of barcnial race, and holds the above vicarage, value not exceeding 20l. sterling, receives a yearly pension, reserved to him by papal authority, of 24 marks sterling upon the fruits etc. of the archdeaconry of Lothian (Laudonie) in St. Andrews, and to whom the pope lately made provision of a canonry with reservation of a prebend and dignity, not major, personatus or office of Glasgow, and of a benefice with or without cure, wont to be assigned to secular clerks, in the gift of the Benedictine abbot and convent of Dunfermlyn in the said diocese) to hold for life any two benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases. Dispensation to him (who is of noble birth and to whom, then a clerk of the papal camera, the pope recently made provision of the see of Bangor; who has alienated a great part of his patrimony in order to redeem himself from the hands of certain of his enemies into which he had fallen; and who cannot decently support his episcopal estate from the fruits of his episcopal mensa, which are taxed in the papal camera at only 126 gold florins of the camera) to retain, even after his consecration or after the lapse of the canonical time for consecration, or after he has obtained possession of the rule and administration of the temporalities, during the pleasure of the apostolic see, the parish church of Eard in the diocese of Rochester, value not exceeding 40 marks, of the patronage of laymen, which he held at the time of his said provision and still holds. Dispensation to him, who is in subdeacon's orders, and is in his twenty-second year only, to be promoted to deacon's and priest's orders, even extra tempora, and to minister therein. Vite etc.
14 Kal. March. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 239d.)	To Master Poggio de Florencia, rector of Drokenesford in the diocese of Winchester, papal writer and member of the pope's household. Dispensation to him, who is also an abbreviator of papal letters, and is in minor orders only, not to be bound for a year from the present date to have himself promoted to any holy order on account of the said church, which he holds, and of which he has not yet had a year's peaceable possession. 8 Kal. May. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 240d.)	To the bishops of Hereford and Lichfield. Mandate to receive from William, bishop of Carlisle, recently translated thither by the pope from Bangor, in order to save him the labour and expense of coming to the Roman court, the usual oath of fealty, according to the form enclosed, and send it to the pope as usual. Dispensation to him (who holds the above vicarage and a canonry and prebend of Glasgow, value not exceeding 30l. and 50l. sterling respectively, and to whom the pope lately ordered provision to be made of a benefice with or without cure, wont to be assigned to secular clerks, in the common or several gift of the Cluniac abbot and convent of Paisley (de Passeleto) and the Benedictine abbot and convent of Kilwynnyne in the diocese of Glasgow, with the condition that upon obtaining such benefice with cure he was to resign the said vicarage) to hold for five years together with the said vicarage any other benefice with cure [or otherwise] incompatible, and to resign both, simply or for exchange, once only. 4 Kal. March. St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 249d.)	To Edward Lawedre, canon of Glasgow, M.A. Dispensation as below. Lately, namely on 4 Kal. Feb. anno 1 [1418], the pope granted him provision of a canonry of Glasgow and of another of Dunkeld with reservation of as many prebends and of a dignity, not major, personatus, etc. of one of them. Subsequently the pope ordained in favour of the university of Paris that, for that time only, doctors of theology and canon law, masters of medicine and arts inscribed in the principal roll of the said university and bona fide resident and having taken their degrees there, should, in obtaining the benefices which they were expecting in virtue of graces made to them by the pope in the said roll, have preference before all other expectants, with certain exceptions. At Edward's recent petition containing that although he has taken his degree of M.A. in the said university, he was absent therefrom and is not named in the said roll, the pope grants to him (who is a priest and a licentiate of theology, and who lately received papal dispensation, as the son of an unmarried man and an unmarried woman, to be promoted etc. as above, f. 14d, afterwards to hold therewith two other mutually compatible benefices with and without cure, and subsequently any mutually compatible benefices of any number and kind, with and without cure, even if canonries and prebends, dignities etc., and to resign them, for exchange or otherwise, as often as he pleased; to whom the pope lately ordered provision to be made of a canonry and prebend of St. Andrews and the archdeaconry of Lothian (Loudonie) therein, a dignity with cure, about which canonry and prebend and archdeaconry he is litigating, and of the provostship, which was then to be created as a principal dignity with cure, in the church, to be erected into a collegiate church, of St. Giles, Edinburg [above, pp. 136, 137], and granted provision of a canonry and prebend of Moray, value altogether not exceeding 200l. sterling; and whom the pope dispensed to hold together for five years the parish church of Schuthak in the diocese of Glasgow and the above archdeaconry, further dispensing him, before the expiry of the said period, to hold them together during the pleasure of the apostolic see, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, and hold instead two other incompatible benefices, etc.) that in obtaining the above prebends and dignity etc., in virtue of the said first grant, he may and shall use and enjoy the said privilege. A salutary penance is to be imposed on John, who is also to be rehabilitated and dispensed on account of irregularity, after he has made satisfaction to the dean and the said church and to others to whom it is due. John XXIII dispensed him to hold for seven years with the archdeaconry of Essex, a dignity with cure, which he then held, any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church etc., and to resign both, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased, with the usual exchange or resignation condition [Cal. Lett. VI, p. 287], after which, as his recent petition contained, he resigned the said archdeaconry and obtained the above precentorship, a nonmajor dignity with cure, value not exceeding 120 marks, the parish church of Stokenham in the diocese of Exeter, value not exceeding 100l., and the canonry and prebend of Stratforde in Salisbury [cf. ibid.], value not exceeding 10 marks, all which he holds at present. The pope hereby grants to him, who has to keep personal residence at the church of Salisbury on account of the precentorship and hospitality to guests and pilgrims, a prolongation of three years from the end of the above term, which is not yet expired, with the usual exchange or resignation clause in respect of the said precentorship and parish church. Mandate (at the recent petition of the inhabitants of the town or hamlet of Walberswyk in the parish of Blyburgh in the diocese of Norwich, containing that there was for a long time a chapel of St. Andrew the Apostle in their said town, in which they had masses and other divine offices and all sacraments and sacramentals, but not burial, and in which the Augustinian prior and convent of Blyburgh in the said diocese, to which Blyburgh parish church is annexed, were. bound to keep at their own expense a fit priest for the purpose; that the floods having completely desolated the said chapel, the said inhabitants have, with consent and licence of the ordinary and of the said prior and convent, built in a suitable place a new chapel of St. Andrew with a cemetery contiguous to it, in which they have, with consent and licence of the ordinary and of the prior and convent, all that they had in the destroyed chapel), if he find the facts to be as stated, to confirm the building of the said new chapel, to grant that the said inhabitants may have chapel and cemetery consecrated by a catholic bishop, that in the new chapel, when consecrated, they may have everything which they had in the old one, and therein and in the said cemetery the right of burial, saving the right of the said parish church and of any other. Recently the pope made provision to Nicholas Tunok, dean of Aberdeen, M.A., of the said deanery, a major dignity with cure, then void, and previously specially reserved, and granted reservation to Edward de Lawrede, priest, of the diocese of St. Andrews, licentiate of theology, during the pleasure of the apostolic see, of a yearly pension of 20l. of old sterlings [from] the fruits etc. of the said deanery, to be paid by Nicholas, after obtaining possession of the deanery, and by his successors, in the church of St. Giles, Edenborch, half at Whitsuntide and half at Martinmas.
