To the abbot of Holyrood (Sancte Crucis), Edinburgh, in the diocese of St. Andrews. Mandate as below. The recent petition of the provost, bailies and commonalty (universitas) of Edinburgh contained that they desire the erection into a collegiate church of the parish church of St. Giles (the patronage of which, formerly belonging to the king, has been surreptitiously acquired by the Augustinian abbot and convent of Scone in the said diocese, and in which there are at present thirteen perpetual chaplaincies), the creation of a provostship, as a principal dignity, from its perpetual vicarage or rectory, and the creation of canonries and prebends and other dignities etc. from the said chaplaincies and other resources; adding that, in order that the said erection may be made, they are ready to promise to find 100 gold crowns a year for the increase of the endowment of the college or capitular mensa, and to urge on the work of building the said church, for which a few years ago more than 5,000 or 6,000l. of old sterlings were laid out; that the patronage of the said chaplaincies belongs to them, and that the fruits etc. of the said vicarage do not exceed a yearly value of 100l. The above abbot is ordered to summon the said abbot and convent and others concerned, and if he find that the said patronage was acquired by them as stated, to decree that it does not belong to them, to carry out, upon the said provost etc. undertaking to provide the said 100 crowns within a fixed period, and upon the consent being given of the persons interested on account of the said patronage, the desired erection and creations, and, in the event of his doing so, to collate and assign the provostship, thus created, to Edward de Lawedre, rector of Southack in the diocese of Glasgow, M.A., who lately received papal dispensation, as the son of an unmarried man and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, afterwards to hold two other benefices therewith, and subsequently to hold any mutually compatible benefices, of any number and kind, with and without cure, even if canonries and prebends, dignities etc., and to resign them for exchange or otherwise as often as he pleased, and furthermore to hold together, first for five years and subsequently during the pleasure of the apostolic see, the said church of Southack and the archdeaconry of Lothian (Laudonie) in St. Andrews, a non-major elective dignity with cure, provision of which, previously reserved, the present pope made to him, and to resign them both, simply or for exchange. The patronage of the provostship, except for this turn, and of the said canonries and prebends etc., is to be reserved in perpetuity to the said provost, bailies and commonalty. The collation is to be made notwithstanding that Edward holds Southak (sic), which in a certain event he is bound to resign, that provision was made to him of the said archdeaconry, as above, value not exceeding 20 and 100l. respectively, and that the present pope has granted him provision of the parish church of Lyston in the said diocese, value not exceeding 100l., and of canonries with reservation of prebends of Glasgow and Dunkeld, and of a dignity etc. of one of them. Upon obtaining the provostship, he is to resign Southak, as he has offered, and the grant in regard to Lyston and the other grant, as far as regards such dignity etc., are to be null and void. To the archbishop of Canterbury. Mandate to inform himself about the statements made in the recent petition of the mayor and commonalty (dilectorum filiorum altermani et communis) of the city of London, namely, that there was formerly from of old, near the middle (circa medium) of the bridge of the said city, a parish church of St. Thomas the Martyr, and that after the said bridge had been totally destroyed by fire, the masters or wardens appointed for the repair of the bridge, built out of the obventions a chapel in honour of the said Saint where the said church used to stand, and thenceforward, likewise from time immemorial, have received the obventions, alms and offerings made therein, and have converted them to the use of a number of priests and chaplains and others appointed for divine worship in the said chapel, and for the repair of the bridge, as they still do; and that the said mayor and commonalty (altermannus et communitas) continually see to the oft-needed repair of the bridge. If the archbishop find the facts to be as stated, he is to reserve from the said obventions etc. a fit portion for a perpetual chaplain in the said chapel, to be instituted by the ordinary, and to grant licence to the said mayor and commonalty (altermano et commumtati) to receive what remains and to apply it to the said repair. To Donald Oscachnasayg, rector of Ardrahayn in the diocese of Kilmacduagh. Rehabilitation, on account of the following. Lately the present pope made provision to him of the above church, void in a certain way, of the patronage of laymen, under which he obtained possession, but Denis Macgillavanaha, provost of Kilmacduagh, prevented him from holding peaceable possession and receiving the fruits etc., in consequence of which and of the threats of Denis's abettors, he promised under oath to assign him half the yearly fruits etc., which half Denis still receives, wherefore, and on account of the assertion that the church became void otherwise than was stated, and is still void, he fears molestation. Besides absolving him from his promises and oath, and rehabilitating him, the pope grants that the said provision shall hold good from the present date, in whatsoever way the said rectory, whose value does not exceed 40 marks, became void. Feb. anno 1 [1418] the pope ordered provision to be made to him of two benefices with or without cure, even if canonries and prebends or dignities, not major nor principal, personatus etc. in the common or several gift of the bishops and chapters of St. Andrews and Aberdeen, and dispensed him to hold together for life such two incompatible benefices, provided that they were not parish churches, and to resign them, simply or for exchange; by successive letters made provision to him of the parish church of Kirkgon[z]en in the diocese of Glasgow in commendam, of a canonry and prebend and the archdeaconry of Teviotdale (Thevidalia) in Glasgow, and of the perpetual vicarage of Enverlithan in the said diocese, and dispensed him to hold together during the pleasure of the apostolic see the said vicarage and archdeaconry, and to resign both meanwhile, simply or for exchange; and likewise granted him provision of the parish churches of Magna Caveris and Gogar in the dioceses of Glasgow and St. Andrews and of the archdeaconry of Lothian (Laudonie) in St. Andrews, with its annexes, by virtue of which letters he has obtained Kirkgon[z]en in commendam and the said canonry and prebend and archdeaconry of Teviotdale, and has resigned the said grants and his right in the said vicarage of Enverlithan. At his petition, containing that he doubts whether the said first letters, as regards benefices with cure or dignities, personatus etc. comprised therein, have not been used up (consumptas) on account of the said provision, grants, benefices obtained and resignation, and whether he may not be molested in respect of their taking effect, the pope grants to him (who holds the said church of Kirkgon[z]en in commendam, and holds canonries and prebends of Dunkeld and of Glasgow with the said archdeaconry of Teviotdale, a non-major dignity with cure, value altogether not exceeding 80l. of old sterlings) that the said first letters shall hold good from the date thereof, and may and shall be executed. John XXIII dispensed him, holding the above parish church and the provostship of the collegiate church of Holyhead (de Castro Kubii) in the diocese of Bangor, an office without cure, to hold for seven years with the said parish church any other benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church or a perpetual vicarage or a dignity etc., and meanwhile to resign both, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased [Cal. Lett. VI. p. 206], by virtue of which he has obtained and holds with the said church the archdeaconry of Anglesey in Bangor, a non-major dignity. At his petition, stating that the end of the seven years is at hand, and that the houses and buildings of the said archdeaconry and church, whose total value does not exceed 70 marks, are from no fault of his in great ruin, the pope grants to him, who has been in the service of king Henry for sixteen years, on condition of making the needful repairs, a prolongation by four years of the said period. Lately the present pope, upon learning of the voidance of a canonry and prebend of Glasgow and the archdeaconry of Teviotdale therein, value not exceeding 80l. of old sterlings, by the death of James Walteri, ordered them to be collated and assigned to him. Seeing that Edward de Lawedre, to whom provision was said to have been made of the same, has this day at the apostolic see resigned them and all right in them to John, patriarch of Constantinople, who had verbal mandate from the pope for the purpose, and seeing that, as William's petition contained, it is asserted that the said canonry etc., of which he has obtained possession under the pope's said letters, became and are void otherwise than as above, the pope grants to him (who holds a canonry and prebend of Dunkeld; holds in commendam the parish church of Kyrkgun[z]en under a grant lately made to him by the apostolic see; to whom provision was lately made by papal authority of the perpetual vicarage of Enverlithan in the diocese of Glasgow; and to whom the pope has granted provision of a canonry and prebend of Ross, value not exceeding 60l., and of two benefices with or without cure, even if canonries and prebends or dignities, not major nor principal, personatus etc. in the common or several gift of the bishops and chapters of St. Andrews and Aberdeen, with dispensation to hold together for life such two incompatible benefices, provided that they were not parish churches, and to resign them, simply or for exchange, subsequently dispensing him to hold together during the pleasure of the apostolic see the said archdeaconry, a non-major dignity with cure, and vicarage, and to resign both meanwhile, simply or for exchange), that the said collation and provision shall hold good from the present date, in whatsoever way the said canonry and prebend and archdeaconry became void.
