A like decree, and for the same reason, in regard to the confirmation by Alexander V on the same date as above, viz. 13
Kal. Jan. anno 1, of the appropriation by the late Richard, bishop of Salisbury, to the Augustinian prior and convent of Mottisfont (de Montefonte) in the diocese of Winchester, value not exceeding 300 marks, of the parish church, of their patronage, of St. James, Berewyk, in his diocese, value not exceeding 30 marks. Bishop Richard made the appropriation, having summoned the late Robert Hywerth, rector of St. James's, and others, and having found true the statements of the prior and convent, namely that their lands, fields, etc., situate for the most part by the sea shore, were frequently invaded by Flemings, French and Normans and other enemies of the realm, for the defence of which men-at-arms from time to time lodged at the priory, consumed its animals and grain, and plundered and carried away as booty other of its moveable goods, wherefore the cultivators (coloni) of the said fields had left them for the most part uncultivated; that before those times their buildings were not a little collapsed; that the serfs (serri censuales), who had been wont to pay servile work and a yearly cess and to feed the said animals, had died by the frequent pestilences, so that their possessions were almost reduced to naught; that in consequence their church and houses, granges and manors were ruinous and not easy to repair; and that the store animals (animalia ad staurum, ut eorum rerbis utamur) of their manors had been in great number taken from them. Decree—at the recent petition of Donatus Odubnarla, prior, and the convent of the Augustinian priory of St. Mary, Galynne, in the diocese of Clonmacnoise (Cluanen.), containing that they are in great poverty because the fruits etc. of their monastery, in which a fixed number of canons has not yet been instituted, do not exceed 12 marks, with which not more than a prior and three canons, even living miserably, can be sustained; and that from time to time, at the importunate and irresistible prayers of many persons, sometimes even of magnates, they are compelled to receive more persons as canons and brethren —that henceforth no persons shall be admitted as canons, even by papal letters or letters of papal legates, which do not make verbatim mention of these presents, so long as the number of one prior and three canons be maintained, which number the pope wills to be inviolably observed, unless the resources be so increased that more canons can be maintained. papal dispensation, as the son of a priest religious and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all dignities and offices of his order, after which he obtained St. John Baptist's—if found fit in Latin, or if he swear to become so within a year, the Benedictine priory of St. Peter, Athlone (de Innocencia alias de Nocencia juxta Athluain), in the same diocese, which has cure, is a conventual dignity, and is elective, value not exceeding 100 marks, void by the death of William Ochomultaig. Upon obtaining St. Peter's, which he is hereby dispensed to hold, he is to resign St. John Baptist's, whose value does not exceed 40 marks. Mandate to collate and assign to Nicholas Staunton, Augustinian canon of the church of Dublin—whose recent petition contained that on the voidance of the priory thereof by the death of James Redyngnys, he was elected by the chapter and had his election confirmed by archbishop Thomas by his ordinary authority, and has held it for about nine months and still holds it; whose said petition added that inasmuch as it is asserted that James was a papal chaplain, he doubts whether the election and confirmation hold good; and who lately received papal dispensation, as the son of a married man and an unmarried woman, to hold any perpetual administrations and offices of his order below the abbatial dignity, after which he obtained the Augustinian priory of Louth, which is conventual and elective, and which after holding for many years he has resigned—if found fit in Latin, or if he swear to become so within a year, the said priory, which has cure and is a major dignity, value not exceeding 400 marks, still void, as the pope has learned, as above. To Thady Okellaid, canon of Elphin. Decree giving retrospective force to, and sufficing as proof of, the following mandate granted by Alexander V on 5 Id. March anno 1 [1410]. That pope, at the petition of Matthew Omulymnain, Augustinian canon of St. Mary's, Cluaintuaisgert, in the diocese of Elphin— containing that Boniface IX ordered provision to be made to him of the said priory, on its voidance by the death of Maurice Megneil, and dispensed him, as the son of a priest religious and an unmarried woman, to hold it, by virtue of which he obtained and held it in peace for many years; that because he afterwards went to and adhered to the Council of Pisa, Angelus Corario, called Gregory XII, after the departure of the cardinals from Lucca, deprived him, and ordered provision of the priory, as being thus void, to be made to Hector Maciago, canon of the same, under pretext of which Hector dispossessed him, intruded himself and held it for a year and more; and that it was asserted that the priory had become and was void otherwise than by the death of Maurice—ordered a judge in those parts, if he found the above to be the case, to annul the letters of Angelus, to restore Matthew and remove Hector, and to collate and assign the priory, with cure, elective, and value not exceeding 40 marks, whether void by the said death or otherwise, to Matthew. Seeing that pope Alexander's letters, on account of his death, were not drawn up, the pope makes the present decree, and orders the above canon to execute them. Racioni congruit. (Pro deo.) |

That pope ordered provision to be made to Patrick Machmurcerchaid, then Augustinian canon of St. James's without the walls, Pisa, of the Augustinian priory of St. Mary, Dorean, in the diocese of Elphin, so long void that there was no certain knowledge of the manner of its voidance. Pope Alexander subsequently, on 2 Non. March anno 1 [1410], granted for life in commendam to the said Patrick—who asserted that provision had been made to him, under the pope's said letters, of the said priory, the fruits of which, not exceeding 20 marks, were insufficient— the perpetual vicarage of Killundan in the said diocese, value not exceeding 2 marks, then void because the said Patrick, who was, when vicar thereof, a secular clerk, had entered and made his profession as a canon of St. James's.
