Confirmation, at the recent petition of John Russell, perpetual vicar of St. Nicholas's Abendon, of certain statutes and ordinances made by the late Ralph, bishop of Salisbury. The bishop's ordinances—Univ. sancte etc. Cum nos nuper, which are the result of a recent visitation, and of which exemplification is given, are dated at the bishop's park of Remmesbur[y], 7 May, 1386, the eleventh year of his consecration. They state, on the report of the archdeacon of Berks, the bishop's official, that the vicarage has been wont to consist of all the oblations and obventions of the altar of the said church, of tithes of lambs, wool, linen, flax, whether in the gardens of the parishioners or in the fields, of milk, cheese, and honey, of artificers’ work (negociacionis) and of calves, geese, pigeons, eggs, apples, and of certain small tithes of the whole parish, with a corrody in the abbey of Abendon, all which barely amounts to 100s. a year, which is insufficient. Thereto, in order to avoid suits and discords between the rector and vicar, are added, with consent of Richard of Lichfield, proctor of Richard Clavile, rector, and that of John Gray, vicar, portions of the great tithes of wheat and hay of the whole township (villata) of Suggeworth, situate within the said parish of St. Nicholas. Moreover, the vicar and his successors shall have for their habitation, as they have been wont, a hall (aulam) contiguous to the said church, with two adjacent rooms and a kitchen, which houses (domorum) they shall henceforward be bound to repair, and the rector and his successors shall bear all charges for repair of the chancel, the payment of a pension of 14s. to the hospital of St. John, opposite the said church, the payment of the royal tenth, whenever granted, and all other charges touching the said church. To the prior of St. Nicholas's, Pembroke, in the diocese of St. Davids. Mandate, if he find to be as stated the facts set forth in the recent petition of Richard Clement, priest, of the said diocese, to absolve him and dispense him on account of irregularity, if any, contracted. Richard states that he was hired by an honest citizen and dwelt in his house, and that a certain kinswoman of the citizen's wife, belonging to the family of the citizen himself, at the repeated instigation of a married man left the house with him for the purpose of fornication. Richard followed them with sword and bow to bring her back, and when he reached the place where he believed them to be, he was met by William Wellys, a servant (famulus) of the married man, with his bow strung after the fashion of the English, ready to resist. Afraid of William's bow, but ashamed to flee, Richard went up to take William's bow from him, who thus unable to use his bow drew his sword and wounded Richard in two of his fingers, upon which Richard, provoked to anger, likewise drew his sword and totally cut off (amputavit) William's right hand. Confirmation of the grants, pledge etc. as below, made in favour of the chapel of St. Mary, Wolavyngton, in the diocese of Bath and Wells. The petition of Thomas Cadecote, Thomas
Moy and Thomas Perys, the three perpetual chaplains by whom it is served, states that formerly the master and brethren of the hospital of St. John, Burggewatir, and the Cistercian abbot and convent of Cleyve, in the said diocese, made certain grants to the chapel and its chaplains, as a pledge for the observance of which the abbot and convent placed the church of Cammel, which they held to their uses, at the disposition of the diocesan. The letters—Omnibus Christifid. etc. Attendentes affectuosas, of Gilbert, master, and the brethren and sisters of the hospital of St. John Baptist, Brugge, dated at Brugge, the Monday next after the Conversion of St. Paul 1285, of which exemplification is given, state that in return for the collations made to them and their house by Sir Gilbert de Wollavyngton, rector of Hounspull, they at his instance give in frankalmoin from their goods to Roger de Cornubia and his successors, chaplains of St. Mary's chapel, built by the said Gilbert in the cemetery of Wollavyngton, the yearly sum of 33s. 4d. and eight quarters of good and clean corn, of eight bushels each; that is to say 8s. 4d. on the second day of Christmas, 8s. 4d. on Easter Monday, 8s. 4d. on the Nativity of St. John Baptist, and 8s. 4d. at Michaelmas; four quarters of corn on the morrow of Michaelmas, two on the morrow of the Purification and two on Easter Monday, by way of corrody for Roger and his successors, serving the said chapel and celebrating divine offices for the souls of king Edward [I], Robert Burnell, bishop of Bath and Wells, and his successors, Master Walter de Haselschaue, archdeacon of Wells, and his successors, the said Gilbert, his parents, friends and benefactors, and all faithful departed; binding themselves to submit, in case of default, to the censure of the bishop of Bath or his official, and reserving to Roger and his successors their resort to common law (quod eis per curiam regiam competit seu competere possit). If Gilbert and his heirs do not present a chaplain within 40 days after voidance the bishop shall have the collation for that turn. The Letters—Univ. sancte etc. Cum Gilbertus, of abbot Henry and the convent of Clyve, sealed and dated in their chapter 4 Nov. 1297, and witnessed by Sirs John de Cogan, Robert Martyn, William Tryvet, Robert de Sancto Claro, Gilbert de Bere, knights, Richard Pyke, Richard de Avel, Thomas Trivet, Hugh Maundevil, Hugh de Wales and others, and of which exemplification is also given, state that whereas Gilbert de Wolavyngton desires, for the benefit of their house, two secular priests to be constituted and sustained by them in the chapel of St. Mary the Virgin, built by him in the cemetery of the church of Wollavyngton for the celebration of divine offices therein, and also two monks, priests, to do the like in their monastery, they, at his instance, grant to Sirs Robert de Wildem[er]sse and John de Sapwicke, secular chaplains, and their successors, to be received through the monk-porter, 10 marks a year for their sustentation, and 1 a year for lights and repairs of the chapel, that is, 5½ at Michaelmas, and the like on SS. Philip and James; the said secular chaplains being bound to say daily the Placebo, Dirige, Commendacio, matins, and other canonical hours in the said chapel, for the souls of the said Gilbert and his parents, of the kings of England and the bishops of Bath and Wells, of all benefactors of the said Gilbert, and all faithful departed. If payment be wholly or partly in arrear the said chaplains or their envoys, with three horses and three servants, shall be honourably entertained in the abbey until full satisfaction be made. They shall have their recovery by novel disseisin, unless the whole of the money be restored to them within three days. The abbot and convent bind themselves to add, in memory of the said Gilbert, two to their number of twenty-six monks, and to pay to their said monk-porter yearly on the octave of Easter 60s. to buy cloth (pannum escnialem or estivalem) for the cowls (cucullis) of fifteen monks, and on Lady Day 1 mark for the pittance of the convent, and 10s. to be distributed in bread to the poor. Exemption from the jurisdiction of the abbot and convent of Colchester, at the petition of Isabella, countess of Suffolk, of the Benedictine priory of Snape, in the diocese of Norwich, founded by the late William Mactel (i.e. Martel) and Albreda his wife. The said founders gave their manors of Snape and Aldeborugh to the monastery of Colchester on condition that the abbot —who should hold a visitation twice a year—and convent should keep in the priory a prior and monks, who should pay them yearly a pension of half a mark, and pray for the souls of the founders, their ancestors and successors. The petition of the countess, who has the patronage of the priory, added that although its means are enough for a prior and several monks, for a long time past the prior alone has resided, although some monks have been sent by the abbot, not to reside permanently however, but only temporarily, so that divine worship is neglected, and the founders’ intention defeated. The pope therefore places the priory under the diocesan, wills that the prior shall admit to profession and residence as many monks as is possible under the provision made by the founders, and grants faculty to such monks to elect their prior, the election being afterwards confirmed by the diocesan.
