De Provisionibus [Prelatorum].

9 Kal. March.
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f 160.) (fn. 8)
Provision to John Macmemnan, a Cistercian monk of Assaroe (Sameria), in priest's orders, of the see of Raphoe (Rathboten), void by the cession of bishop Cornelius, made at the apostolic see through the said John, his proctor, to Francis, cardinal priest of St. Susanna's, and thereby reserved to the pope, in accordance with the reservation which the pope had lately made of provisions of all cathedral churches and monasteries which should become void at the said see. Pastoralis officii.
Concurrent letters to the chapter, to the clergy and to the people of the city and diocese—Pastoralis etc. and to the archbishop of Armagh—Ad cumulum.

Footnotes

  • 1. The fee for the chaplaincy without specific mention of privileges is X [grossi], for the chaplaincy with privileges XX. The registration is frequently so brief that the amount of the fee is the only olue to the extent of the grant. All the letters are dated at St. Peter's, Rome. The Incipit in all cases is Virtutibus clarens.
  • 2. Of the following remission indults the only one which is registered with any fulness is the first, viz. to Elizabeth, relict. The abbreviated form in which the indults for remission at the hour of death are ordinarily registered is thus:— “Bonifacius, etc. dilecto filio M. salutem, etc. Provenit, etc. Datum … N. xiiii. [grossi] de Ben [even] to.” The abbreviated form in which the indults of remission as often as desired are registered is thus: “Bonifacius, etc. dilecto filio M. salutem, etc. Provenit, etc. usque confessus fueris tociens quociens tibi placuerit et videbitur oportunum, etc. Datum … N. xxx. de Ben [even] to.” When the registration is very brief the amount of the fee, except in de mandato cases, affords, as in the case of papal chaplaincies, a clue to the nature of the grant.
  • 3. At this point, f. cxlv., the foliation in Roman numerals ceases, and is continued irregularly in Arabic as far as f. 254, when Roman numerals re-appear with f. cxlvi. (followed by another f. cxlvi., and then by Arabic numerals to the end of the volume), under the title ‘de provisionibus.’ The intervening Arabic f. 146-254 would thus seem to have been interpolated between f. cxlv. and f. cxlvi. The interpolation must, however, have been closely contemporary. For the present order of the quaternions agrees with a table of contents, evidently cut from the original parchment binding, and now loosely inserted between f. 12 and f. 13.
  • 4.
