Dec. anno 11, but not expedited owing to his death, confirming the foundation by William, bishop of Winchester, in the church of Edyndon, in the diocese of Salisbury, his birthplace, which is a prebend of Romsey, and consequently neglected, of a chantry of three chaplains in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Katherine, and All Saints, to whom the church is dedicated, with the consent of Robert, bishop of Salisbury, the chapters of Winchester and Salisbury, John de Edyndon, canon of Romsey, who holds the church as his prebend, and Joan, abbess, and the convent of Romsey; it being ordained that one only of the chaplains should be perpetual, and be called the Warden; and also confirming the subsequent appropriation, made with the consent of the same persons and of Roger, archdeacon of Salisbury, of the church of Edyndon to the said chantry, and the appointment of three more chaplains, and exemplifying— |
(1.) Letters of William, bishop of Winchester, dated at Schwthwerch, 20th October 1351, and confirmed as above, founding the said chantry to pray for the souls of himself, his father Roger, his mother Amice, his brother John, the royal family of England, and the bishops of Salisbury and Winchester. The warden, after William's death, is to be presented by the bishop of Salisbury, and if he fails to present within two months, the right lapses to the dean and chapter, and they also failing, to the archbishop of Canterbury. The warden is to reside continuously, unless the affairs of the chantry demand his absence. He is to appoint the chaplains, whom he must maintain, and may not dismiss without cause. He shall pay the chaplains 40s. a year each at Candlemas and Midsummer, and a decent suit (raubam) or else a mark of silver at Christmas. He shall have himself 4 marks of silver a year and a suit or 20s. The remaining income is to be applied to the use of the chantry; an indented inventory of the stock is to be made every year, one part to remain with the warden, the other with one of the chaplains, and to be shown once a year to the founder or to the diocesan. The warden and chaplains are to eat together, but the warden shall have a separate house. The warden shall provide a clerk to serve mass, and wait upon the canons and also find decent surplices, and black tippets (almucias), lined with fur, for use in the church. On the vacancy of the wardenship, the senior chaplain is to administer the chantry. The warden and chaplains are to say the office of the dead together every day after dinner and before vespers, and also the usual hours according to Salisbury use, and masses every day, including one mass for the dead, and in the commemoration for the dead they shall remember the founder and his kin, and then Adam, bishop of Winchester, and Gilbert de Midelton, archdeacon of Northampton and official of the court of Canterbury. The warden can sell none of the property, and there shall be no common seal. Only the warden may entertain guests; the others must pay 3d. for the dinner of a guest, or 2d. for any other meal. They are to avoid taverns, and not enter any house without leave of the warden. |

Letters of Robert, bishop of Salisbury, to Walter Scarlet, warden, and the chaplains of the above chantry, dated at Salisbury, 28 October 1351, confirmed as above and witnessed by William Scarlet, appropriating to the chantry the vicarage of Edyndon with the chapel of Bradeleye, for the support of three more chaplains. |

Of the letters of the said earl, dated Londers, 16 March 1350, and witnessed by William, bishop of St. Andrews; Robert Steward (Senescallus) of Scotland, guardian of the realm; Thomas Steward, earl of Angws; David de Lindesay, David de Wemys, and Thomas de Flawford, knights; Master Walter, rector of Erlol and canon of Glasgow; Master Thomas de Harcers, rector of Dunkerny; Lawrence Bol, prior of Abernethy; Robert de la Den, rector of Templistan and canon of Glasgow; Laurence de Wymmerston, Norman de Lassely, John Malevil, David de Berkelay, Henry de Swynton, John the earl's clerk, John de Snyot, and many others, granting the said church, at present held by Alexander de Cumboch, to the said monastery of St. Mary and St. Andrew, in fulfilment of a vow made when he was taken prisoner by the English in the battle near Durham. |
(2.) Letters of William, bishop of St. Andrews, dated at St. Andrews 12 April 1352, and confirmed by the chapter, appropriating the said church to the said abbot and convent, who are to pay their vicar 10 marks a year.
