1474. Id. July. (15 July.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 36r.)	To Thomas, (fn. 2) [bishop] elect of Banados (Panaden.). Dispensation, as below. The pope has this day made provision to him of the said church, the pope's will being that as soon as he has had the letters of his provision expedited he shall repair to the said church and reside in person therein, and that he shall be unable to exercise pontifical offices without the city and diocese of Banados. Seeing that he cannot safely betake himself thither, and reside in person, the said church being in the parts of the infidels, the pope hereby grants him dispensation not to be bound to do so, and, after he has been consecrated, to exercise the said offices in the city and diocese of St. Davids only, where requested by the diocesan. 1475. 7 Kal. June. (26 May.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 56v.)	To the archbishop of Patras, the abbot of St. Columba's de Cella nigra, Londonderry, and the official of Derry. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of John Magillabridi, priest, of Londonderry, contained that after provision had by papal authority been made to him of the deanery of Londonderry when he was holding the perpetual vicarage of Fayinura in the diocese of Derry, he demitted the said vicarage before certain private ecclesiastical persons whom he thought to be sufficient for the purpose, but that Nicholas bishop of Derry, the said dimission notwithstanding, declared the said deanery to have become and to be void by Execrabilis; and that the said John has de facto detained the said deanery for about four years since the said declaration, taking few of the fruits, viz. to a yearly value of about 6 ducats. The said deanery being therefore still void, the pope hereby rehabilitates the said John (who alleges that he is present in the Roman court [and] has five times journeyed thither from Ireland, (fn. 3) and who was lately dispensed by papal authority on account of illegitimacy, as the son of a priest, professed of the order of St. Augustine, and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, and afterwards to receive and retain the said deanery, if collation thereof were made to him, and to resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased), and orders the above three to collate and assign to him the said deanery, a major elective dignity with cure, value 48 marks sterling, howsoever void, but before they proceed to the execution of these presents, he is to resign it. Prid. Non. July. (6 July.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 89r.) (fn. 4)	To John de Yrlandia, priest, of the diocese of St. Andrews, bachelor of theology. Dispensation to him, who is also M.A. and a completed bachelor of theology, and is lecturing in theology in the university of Paris, (fn. 5) to receive and retain for life any two benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if parish churches, etc., and to resign them, etc. Litterarum scientia, vite etc. [1 p.—]

1476. Kal. July. (1 July.) Amelia. (f. 231r.)	To Nicholas Hom, clerk, of the diocese of St. Andrews. Dispensation, as below. Paul II granted him an indult, (fn. 6) when a scholar and in his eighth year, (fn. 7) to receive and retain thenceforth (ex tunc), after he had been made a clerk, canonries and prebends of collegiate churches, and, after he attained his tenth year, of cathedral churches. At his recent petition, containing that in many cathedral and collegiate churches of those parts some prebends are sacerdotal, the pope hereby dispenses him, who is of noble birth, even of a great race of barons and knights, (fn. 8) and is in his thirteenth year, that as soon as he reaches his fifteenth year he may, by virtue alike of the said former as of the present letters, receive and retain any sacerdotal prebends of any cathedral and collegiate churches, notwithstanding the said defect of age. 5 Id. May. (11 May.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 232r.)	Confirmation, as below. The recent petition of Alexander de Homme, knight, baron, and lord of the place of Homme, and John Edwardi, provost of St. Mary's in the town of Donglas, in the diocese of St. Andrews, contained that after the said Alexander had built the said church to the honour and glory of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and had endowed it for a certain number of persons and one provost, and at length had had it erected into a collegiate church, James king of Scots and William earl of Dowglas, and the said Alexander and other faithful granted and gave for the maintenance of the said provost and persons, and for the con tinuance and increase of divine worship in the said church the patronage of the parish church of Huton with three arable lands, (fn. 9) and that of that of the hospital of Huton with five arable lands, (fn. 9) and that of the parish church of Edran with its lands commonly called ‘apleblande’; the vill of Westirupsedlynton with its lands and waters and all its tithes; the place of Redspetall with its lands and appurtenances; the place of Trafontanis with its appur tenances, lands and tithes; three arable lands (fn. 9) and a mark of land lying in the vill of Kello; four arable lands (fn. 9) and a mark of land and an annual rent of eight marks lying in the vill of Chyrnside; an annual rent of eight marks in the vill of Aldham stokis; the lands of Threplande; five arable lands (fn. 9) in the vill of Aldyneraw; two arable lands (fn. 9) and a half in the vill of Duns five marks of land in the vill of Aldca(n)mos; an annual rent of 40s. in the vill of Blakburn; half an arable land (fn. 9) in the vill of Pyncherton; an annual rent of eight marks in the vill of Tynyngham, which [marks] belonged to the late Thomas Hon [sic]; and other immoveable goods in the diocese of St. Andrews as is said to be more fully contained in divers public instruments and documents. Non. Aug. (5 Aug.) Narni. (f. 234r.)	Appropriation, etc., as below. The pope has learned that the parish church which was formerly, as is presumed, in the place or village (fn. 10) of Westirupsedlynton, in the diocese of St. Andrews (although now utterly destroyed and desolate), has been so long void that there is no certain knowledge of its last way of voidance. And the recent petition of John Edmondson, (fn. 11) provost of the church of St. Mary, Donglas, in the said diocese, M.A., contained that on account of former wars etc. in those parts the inhabitants of the said place or village are obliged to go to neighbouring parish churches in order to receive the sacraments, and know not to whom they ought to pay tithes and other parochial rights, and that they sometimes lack the said sacraments, etc.; that if the tithes of sheaves and other parochial rights of the said village were appropriated in perpetuity to the provostship of the said church of St. Mary, which is a principal dignity, and to which is canonically annexed the parish church of Huton in the said diocese, distant not more than three miles from the said place; and that if the said place and the said village and the whole sometime parish of the said destroyed church were joined to the said parish of Huton, in such wise that the said inhabitants would in future be parishioners of the said church of Huton, and the cure of the souls thereof exercised by the perpetual vicar of that church (the presentation to the perpetual vicarage whereof belongs to the provost of the said church of St. Mary), it would be to the advantage not only of the said provost but also of the souls of the said inhabitants. At the petition, therefore, of the said John, who alleges that the fruits etc. of the said destroyed church do not exceed a yearly value of 9l. (fn. 12) sterling, and those of the said church of St. Mary 24l. sterling, the pope hereby unites and appropriated the said tithes of sheaves and parochial rights to the said provostship, so that the said John may forthwith (ex nunc) take possession thereof, a fit portion being reserved for a perpetual vicar of the said church of Huton. The pope further joins the said place and village and the whole parish aforesaid to the parish of the said church of Huton, so that the said inhabitants shall in future be parishioners of that church, and the cure of their souls be exercised and the sacraments administered to them by the said perpetual vicar. To John Cant, priest, perpetual beneficiary called a prebendary in the church of Dalkeith, in the diocese of St. Andrews, M.A. Dispensation to him, who is by both parents of noble and baronial birth, and confessor and continual commensal chaplain of Margaret, queen of Scots, to receive and retain for life any three benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if they be dignities, etc. or parish churches, etc., and to resign them, etc., provided that not more than two of such benefices be parish churches, etc. Nobilitas generis, litterarum etc. [1½ pp. +]
1476. 18 Kal. July. (14 June.) Vetralla. (fn. 13) (f. 283v.)	Decree, etc., as below. The recent petition of the ministers provincial, custodes, guardians and friars of the seven custodies of the order of Friars Minors in the realm of England contained that although the pope lately, by letters in the form of brevia, granted and gave indult to all persons of both sexes, wherever they were, of the said order and that of St. Clare, and also all procurators, officers, operarii, castiliones, conversi, oblates, and servants (famuli), of both sexes, that by visiting the altar of the church in which they dwelt, and also to the brethren and sisters of the Third Order, that by visiting any convenient church, they should, after making their confession, gain the same indulgences as have been granted to those who visit certain basilicas and churches of Rome, and that the confessor of their choice could absolve them, once only, from all [their sins etc.], even in cases reserved to the apostolic see and enjoin a salutary penance; and subsequently granted to them (in order that they might the more fully gain the said indulgences the more fully they were cleansed from their crimes and sins), and also to their procurators, commissi [? recte conuersi], and castiliones, of both sexes, that the same confessor of their choice could, after hearing their confession, absolve them from all crimes excesses and sins in each of the said reserved cases once only during the year following the date of the pope's letters, and once in the hour of death, and could absolve them from other crimes etc. as often as needful, and enjoin a salutary penance, and that the same or other confessor could grant them plenary remission of all the said sins in the hour of death, nevertheless it is doubted by some whether the said later letters extended to the confratres and consorores of the letters called suffragial [letters] of the houses and persons of the said orders, especially the confratres and consorores in the seven custodies of the province or realm of England. At the said petition, therefore, (fn. 14) for the pope to make a decree, removing all such doubt, that all the aforesaid extends to the said houses and seven custodies and persons, etc., the pope, considering that the persons of the said realm are very distant from Rome, and that therefore, and also on account of wars, few of them have been able (fn. 15) to go thither, hereby decrees that all the letters aforesaid and their contents are to extend to all professors of the said orders, friars and sisters, confratres and consorores of the letters suffragial of the houses aforesaid, of the seven custodies of the said realm, present and future, for a year from the day of the publication of these presents, [and] that the confessor of their choice may, in accordance with the said later letters, absolve them from their said sins, crimes and delicts, and enjoin a salutary penance, and may also grant them plenary remission of all their sins in the hour of death. The recent petition of Nicholas Trappe, clerk, of the said bishop's diocese, bachelor of laws, contained that it is provided in the provincial constitutions etc. of the province of Canterbury that a married clerk, bigamist, or layman cannot exercise the office of notary or registrar or keeper of registers in the said province [see Lyndwood, Provinciale, lib. III., tit. 3. cap. 2. on pp. 129–30 of the Oxford ed. of 1679; Wilkins, Concilia, III., p. 370: etc.] At the petition, therefore, of the said Nicholas, who is married to a widow, the pope hereby grants faculty to the above bishop to grant him the said office, if he have completed his twenty-fifth year, to be exercised by him, even in the said province, in all causes, etc.; with the form of oath appended.
