1476. 15 Kal. June. (18 May.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 1r.)	To the archbishop of Cashel. Mandate, as below. The pope has been informed by Maurice Oyffyrnayn, clerk, of the diocese of Cashel, that William Odomurcha (recte Odonnucha), abbot of St. Mary's, Inishlounaght (de Surio), O. Cist., in the diocese of Lismore, has dilapidated and alienated the immoveable and precious moveables of the said monastery, is a notorious fornicator and has committed simony, and has bound the fruits of the monastery by the name of a yearly pension to a certain person without lawful cause and without licence of the apostolic see, etc., and that through his neglect divine worship is much diminished, and the church of the monastery in great part in ruin and fallen. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above archbishop, if the said Maurice (who was lately dispensed on account of illegitimacy, as the son of an abbot and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure, and who from fear of the power of the said William cannot safely meet him in the city and diocese of Lismore), will accuse William before them, to summon the latter, and if he find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove him, and in that event to cause the said Maurice to be received as a monk of the said monastery and receive his regular profession, and thereupon to make provision to him of the said monastery, value not exceeding 80 marks sterling. The pope further dispenses him to be appointed thereto, notwithstanding the said defect, and grants him licence to be blessed by any catholic bishop in communion with the apostolic see, which bishop shall receive from him the usual oath of fealty according to the form enclosed, and send it to the pope without delay by his (Maurice's) letters patent sealed with his (Maurice's) seal. 9 Kal. June. (24 May.) S. Maria Maggiore, Rome. (f. 2v.)	To the abbot of Melroux (?) (fn. 3) in the diocese of Glasgow, the archdeacon of Glasgow, and William Glendonyng, a canon of the same. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of abbot Robert and the convent of Jeddworth, O.S.A., in the diocese of Glasgow, contained that the late Patrick, earl of Donbart [sic], and Eufemia his wife, founded, with the consent of the late William, bishop of Glasgow, a certain house or place for canons regular of the order of St. Augustine in honour of the Holy Cross in the land of Blantar within their demesne, assigned goods for the maintenance of a prior and canons there, and granted the rule etc. of the said house to the late Philip, abbot of the said monastery, and his successors for ever, so that the abbot should place in the said house a prior at his pleasure and as many brethen or canons as he should think expedient, etc. The said petition added that although the foregoing has been carried out, nevertheless John Bassyndan, a canon of the said order, intruded himself without any title and without the will of the said abbot and convent, and has detained possession for about twenty-four years, has dilapidated its goods, and has kept no canons there. At the petition, therefore, both of the said abbot and convent and of John Turnbul, (fn. 4) a canon of the said monastery (who was lately dispensed by papal authority on account of illegitimacy, as the son of unmarried parents, to receive and retain any compatible benefices with and without cure, of any number and kind, wont to be held by canons of the said order, even if priorships etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased), the pope hereby orders the above three to summon the said John Bassyndan, and if they find the foregoing to be true, to remove him, and in that event to commit the said house, value not exceeding 20l. sterling, with the consent of the said abbot, and during his pleasure and that of his successors, to the said John Turnbul. 7 Id. July. (9 July.) Amelia. (f. 17r.)	To the dean of Raphoe. Mandate, as below. The petition (fn. 5) of Cornelius Olasci, a canon of Raphoe, contained that on the voidance of the rectory of the parish church of Raith in the diocese of Raphoe by the resignation of John Ogalhur to Laurence, bishop of Raphoe, the said bishop made collation and provision of it to the said Cornelius, who in virtue thereof obtained possession, but now doubts whether the said collation and provision hold good. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above dean to collate and assign the said rectory, value not exceeding 12 marks sterling, to the said Cornelius, who is only a clerk (fn. 6); whether it be void as above, or by the death of Clement Offyrygil, or void in any other way. The pope further grants him special indult to be by any catholic bishop of his choice in communion with the apostolic see promoted to all, even holy and priest's orders. Dignum etc. (At the end. To the abbots of St. Mary's, Vdburnn and St. Benedict's, Comur, and the prior of St. Mary's, Moemur [sic], in the dioceses of Connor and Down. Mandate, as below. The pope has learned that the rectory of St. Mary's, Ballemartin, is void by the death extra R.c. of Roger Odubaill, the perpetual vicarage of Maygblysac by the death extra R.c. of John Macfergail, and the perpetual vicarage of Waltaitim [sic] by the death extra R.c. of Alan Obeygam, [all three] desolate parish churches in the dioceses of Connor and Down, and [all three] so long void that their collations have lapsed to the apostolic see. And the recent petition of Patrick Magillarinan, a canon of the monastery of St. Mary, Mocmur, of the order of St. Victor, in the diocese of Connor, contained that the said parish churches are so near one another that the said rectory and vicarages can be easily served by one man. At the petition, therefore, of the said Patrick, who after making his profession had himself promoted to all holy orders, notwithstanding his illegitimacy as the son of unmarried parents, the pope hereby orders the above three, if they find the facts to be as stated, to unite the said vicarages to the said rectory for as long as the said Patrick shall hold it, and in the event of their making such union to collate and assign the said rectory, which has cure, and the value of which and of the said vicarages does not exceed 6 marks sterling, to the said Patrick. The pope further dispenses him to receive and retain the same, notwithstanding that he has made his profession of the said order, and notwithstanding the said defect, etc. Apostolice sedis circumspecta benignitas. 7 Kal. March. (24 Feb.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 38r.)	To the abbots of St. John the Evangelist's, Tuam, St. Michael's, Mayo, and Ballintober (Ville fontis Sancti Patricii), in the diocese of Tuam. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Walter Cusyn, a canon of Tuam, contained that Donatus, archbishop of Tuam, considering the slenderness of the fruits etc. of the canonry and prebend of Kylimgayn in the church of Tuam, which the said Walter holds, united and appropriated thereto by his ordinary authority, with consent of its lay patrons, the then void rectory of the rural lands of Balimgarliat in the diocese of Tuam, for the lifetime of the said Walter; that subsequently, upon the perpetual vicarage of the parish church of St. Geraldus, Mayo, in the said diocese, becoming void because Eugenius Omurcu, [now] a priest, of the said diocese, had held it for a year and more without having himself ordained priest, and without dispensation, and its having been void so long that its collation had lapsed to the apostolic see, the said archbishop made a de facto collation and provision thereof, by the same ordinary authority, to the said Walter, who under pretext of the said union and appropriation and of the said collation and provision took possession of the said rectory and vicarage, and still holds and possesses them, namely the said vicarage de facto, taking its fruits for seven years, likewise de facto, but converting them in great part to the utility of the said church and those who serve it; that, after Paul II's renewal of all sentences of excommunication etc. pronounced by his predecessors against simoniacs, and his reservation of absolution therefrom to himself and his successors, except in the hour of death, the said Walter paid a sum of money to John Omury, a canon of St. Michael's, Mayo, in the same diocese, O.S.[A.], (fn. 7) who had obtained it from the apostolic see as lapsed, in order that he should not molest Walter under pretext of certain papal letters, or should leave him in possession of the said vicarage. (fn. 8) The said collation and provision being therefore without force, and the vicarage being still void as above, the pope hereby orders the above three abbots to summon those concerned, and if they find the facts concerning the said union and appropriation to be true, to approve and confirm the union and appropriation of the said rectory to the said canonry and prebend, value not exceeding 4 and 1 marks sterling, respectively, by papal authority, for the lifetime of the said Walter, absolve him from the guilt of simony and from the said sentences, etc., enjoining a salutary penance, rehabilitate him, and dispense him on account of irregularity incurred, if any, and in the event of their granting such absolution, etc., to collate and assign to him the said vicarage, value not exceeding 4 marks sterling. Kal. Feb. (1 Feb.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 110r.)	To the prior of SS. Peter and Paul the Apostles de Innocentia juxta Athlone in the diocese of Elphin. Mandate to collate and assign to Charles Offalluyn, clerk, of the diocese of Elphin, who notwithstanding his illegitimacy, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, has been made a clerk by authority of the ordinary, a canonry of Elphin and the prebend of Figarth and Kyllemnatha therein, value not exceeding 8 marks sterling, so long void by the death of John Machyillaroyd extra R.c. that its collation has lapsed to the apostolic see, although Dermit Offlanagan, who is to be summoned and removed, has detained it for between one and two years without any title. The pope hereby dispenses the said Charles to have himself promoted to all, even holy orders and receive and retain the said canonry and prebend, notwithstanding the said defect, etc. Dignum etc. (At the end: Jo. xx. 1476. 7 Id. Aug. (7 Aug.) Narni. (f. 157r.)	To the archbishop of Cashel, and Thomas Omulwihyll and Edmund Mares, canons of the same. Mandate, as below. Paul II ordered provision of the priory of St. Edmund, King and Martyr, Hachassel, O.S.A., in the diocese of Cashel, then void by the resignation of Edmund Ardier [recte Archer] alias Stapolton to John, archbishop of Cashel, to be made to Walter de Burgo, a canon of the said priory, who alleged inter cetera that its fruits etc. did not exceed a yearly value of 120 marks sterling; and the present pope, on being informed by Thomas de Burgo, clerk, of the diocese of Emly, that the said Walter had committed very many enormities, then expressed, (fn. 9) ordered certain judges, if they found this to be true, to deprive and remove Walter, and make provision of the priory to the said Thomas, who also alleged that the said fruits etc. did not exceed 95 marks sterling a year, give him the habit, and receive his profession. The recent petition of Dermit Ohyffirnayn, a monk of the monastery of St. Mary, Inishlounaght (de Surio), O. Cist., in the diocese of Lismore, contained that the value of the said fruits etc. is much more, although not more than 180 marks sterling, and that it is reserved to the pope under his general reservation of all conventual priories; and the pope has learned that the said priory is void, and has been so long void that its collation has lapsed to the apostolic see. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above three, if they find the foregoing to be true, to decree and declare his said later letters surreptitious, and in that event to collate and assign to the said Dermit (who alleges that a cause was introduced before John, archbishop of Cashel, one of the said former judges, who promulgated a definitive sentence in favour of the said Thomas, and against the said Walter, in which sentence the latter acquiesced; that the said Dermit has been dispensed by papal authority on account of illegitimacy, as the son of an unmarried man and a married woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and hold a benefice even with cure; and that he receives a yearly pension of 12 marks sterling from the fruits etc. of the said monastery of St. Mary), the said priory, conventual, with cure and elective, howsoever void; summoning and removing the said Thomas and any other unlawful detainer. They are to transfer him, as soon as he has obtained possession of the said priory, from the said monastery of St. Mary to that of St. Edmund, and from the Cistercian order to that of St. Augustine, cause the regular habit thereof to be given to him, and receive his profession. 7 Kal. Aug. (26 July.) Narni. (f. 173r.)	To the abbot of St. Michael's, Maio, in the diocese of Tuam, and Walter Culsin [sic] and John Oculean, canons of Tuam. Mandate to collate and assign to Milerus de Stantona, clerk, of the diocese of Tuam (who was lately dispensed by papal authority on account of illegitimacy, as the son of an unmarried nobleman and an unmarried woman related in the third degree of affinity, to be promoted to all [even holy] orders and hold a benefice even with cure, in virtue of which he has had himself made a clerk) the rectory of the parish church of Burgeskera alias Villanova in the said diocese, of lay patronage, with cure, and value not exceeding 8 marks sterling, so long void by the death of John de Stantona extra R.c. that its collation has lapsed to the apostolic see, although the abbot and convent of Holy Trinity, Ballintober (Ville fontis sancti Patritii), O.S.A., in the said diocese, who are to be summoned and removed, have detained possession for between eighteen and nineteen years, without any title. It has been this day set forth to the pope by Edmund Chaderton, rector of the parish church of Stainton [sic] in the diocese of York, that after Paul II had dispensed him (who alleged that he had been dispensed by papal authority on account of illegitimacy, as the son of a married man and an unmarried woman, to be promoted to all, even holy orders and minister therein, and to receive and retain two compatible benefices with or without cure, even if one were a canonry and prebend in a collegiate church, with faculty to exchange them), to receive and retain for life two other benefices with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if parish churches etc., or dignities etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased, he resigned the parish church of Brughton in the said diocese, which he had obtained in virtue of the dispensation aforesaid, and obtained by canonical collation, and was still detaining, the parish church of Staunton in the said diocese, and, by de facto collations, a canonry of Lincoln and the prebend called Weltan [sic] Rival, a canonry in the church of St. John, Beverley, and a prebend at the altar of St. Catherine, called the second prebend, a canonry and prebend in the church of St. Mary, Sowthwell’, and a canonry and prebend in the chapel royal of St. Stephen, in the said diocese [of York] and that of London, without any other canonical dispensation, (fn. 10) taking some but few of the fruits thereof, whereby he contracted disability, on account of which the pope has by other letters rehabilitated him, and has required him to resign all the said canonries and prebends [above, pp. 516–7]. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above official to collate and assign to the said Edmund (who receives a yearly pension of 10l. sterling from the fruits etc. of the perpetual vicarage of the parish church of Kyrkby Londisdale in the said diocese of York, canonically reserved to him) the said canonries and prebends, after he has resigned them. The pope has been informed by Thady Oberin, a canon of the monastery of St. Mary, Daren, in the diocese of Elphin, (fn. 12) that Cornelius Oberin, prior of St. Mary's, Killmorinasinna, O.S.A., in the said diocese, has dilapidated and alienated divers precious moveable and immoveable goods of the said monastery, and has converted to his base and evil uses the price arising therefrom. (fn. 13) The pope, therefore, hereby orders [the above], if Thady (who lately, being a Friar Preacher, had himself by papal authority transferred, with licence of his superior, to the said monastery of Daren, and the habit of the canons thereof given to him, and who has made his profession of the said order of St. Augustine, and who from fear of the power of the said Thady [recte Cornelius] dares not meet him in the [said] city and diocese) will accuse Cornelius before them, to summon the latter, and if they find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove him, and in that event to collate and assign the said priory, which is conventual, depends on no other monastery or regular place, is elective and has cure, and whose value does not exceed 16 marks sterling a year, to the said Thady. Mandate to collate and assign to Donald Magynn, clerk, of the diocese of Dromore (Drumeren.) (who was lately dispensed by authority of the ordinary on account of illegitimacy, as the son of a priest and an unmarried woman, [to be promoted to minor orders only], and who in virtue thereof has been made a clerk by the present bishop of Down (Dumen. [sic]), to whom he had obtained letters dimissory (fn. 15) ), the rectory of the parish church of St. Romanus de Larni (?) (fn. 14) in the said diocese of Connor, with cure and value not exceeding 4 marks sterling, void by the death of Patrick Magun extraR.c. The recent petition of Edmund Orobartatth [recte Orobartaith], clerk, of the diocese of Raphoe, contained that on the voidance of the perpetual vicarage of the parish church of Teachbuytyn in the diocese of Raphoe, of lay patronage, by the death of Cormac Ogallcubayr extra R.c., the patron Odo Odonayll presented the said Edmund to the bishop, who instituted him, and that in virtue of such presentation and institution he obtained and still holds possession. The said petition adding that he doubts whether the said presentation and institution hold good, the pope hereby orders the above three to collate and assign to him, who is only a clerk, the said vicarage, value not exceeding 12 marks sterling, whether void as above, or by the deprivation of Thomas Yrodrigi (?), (fn. 17) or in any other way. The pope further grants him indult to be promoted to all, even holy and priest's orders, by any catholic bishop of his choice in communion with the apostolic see. Vite etc. (At the end: N. xv. Mandate (the pope having been informed by Patrick Maghynn (?), (fn. 18) clerk, of the diocese of Dromore, that Nicholas Ofernan, rector of the parish church of Killcaeil (fn. 17) in the diocese of Down (Dunen.), of lay patronage has dilapidated and alienated divers precious moveable and immoveable goods of the said church, and converted to evil uses the price arising therefrom, and has committed simony), if the said Patrick (who was lately dispensed by authority of the ordinary on account of illegitimacy, as the son of unmarried parents, to be promoted to minor orders and hold a benefice without cure, after which he had himself made a clerk, and who from fear of the power of the said Nicholas dares not meet him within the city and diocese of Down), will accuse Nicholas before them, to summon the latter, and if they find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove him, and in that event to collate and assign the said church, value not exceeding 8 marks sterling to Patrick. 1475[–6]. 7 Id. March. (9 March.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 252v.)	To the dean of Ardfert, John Fismoris, chancellor of the same and the official of the same. Mandate, as below. The pope has been informed by Dermit Ossulleuain, clerk, of the diocese of Ardfert, that John Onylchanory (?), (fn. 17) prior of Ballinskellig (sancti Michaelis de Rupe), O.S.A., in the diocese of Ardfert, an open and notorious fornicator, has alienated and miserably dilapidated divers immoveable goods of the said monastery and converted them to his evil and damnable uses. The pope therefore, hereby orders the above three, after (fn. 19) Dermit has accused John before them, to summon the latter, and if they find the foregoing to be true, to deprive and remove him, and in that event to collate and assign the said priory, conventual and elective, and value not exceeding 50 marks sterling, to Dermit, cause him to be received as prior (fn. 20) and brother in the said monastery, and receive his regular profession, if he wishes to make it to them. The pope's will is that he shall not be bound, before obtaining peaceable possession of the said priory, to make his profession or receive the habit wont to be worn by the canons thereof, but shall be bound, when he has had it [sc. possession], to make the profession and receive the habit, and resign the benefices which he now holds. Mandate to collate and assign to John Ohaelayn, clerk, of the diocese of Kildare, who was lately made a clerk by authority of the ordinary, notwithstanding his illegitimacy as the son of a clerk and an unmarried woman, the rectory of the parish church of Cluaynsast in the said diocese, of lay patronage, value not exceeding 10 marks sterling, so long void (fn. 22) that its collation has lapsed to the apostolic see, although Donatus Odonnayle, priest, who is to be summoned and removed, has detained possession for between ten and eleven years without any title. The pope hereby dispenses him to be promoted to all, even holy orders, and receive and retain it, and to resign it, as often as he pleases, notwithstanding the said defect, etc. Dignum etc. (At the end: N. xx.
