(13 July.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 66v.)
To the dean and the archdeacon of Kilmore, and Donald Ofergaul [sic], a canon of Ardagh. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Thady Ofegahit, clerk, of the diocese of Kilmore, contained that after Paul II's renewal of all sentences of excommunication etc. against simoniacs, upon the voidance of the rectory of the rural parish of Baleineanthowal in the said diocese (fn. 2) by the resignation of Brittius Oliagily, sometime rector of the said rural parish, (fn. 3) to John, bishop of Kilmore, and its admission by that bishop by his ordinary authority, the said Thady promised to pay to the said bishop a sum of money if he made him collation and provision of the said rectory, which sum he subsequently paid, thereby incurring simony and the said censures, etc., the said bishop making collation and provision to him, he being under the said censures etc., under pretext of which he obtained possession of the said rectory, and has detained it for between about five and six years. The said collation and provision being therefore without force, and the said rectory being still void as above, the pope hereby orders the above three to absolve the said Thady from the said simony and censures etc., enjoin a salutary penance, and rehabilitate him, and in that event to collate and assign to him the said rectory, without cure and value 2 marks sterling. Before they proceed to execution, he is to resign. Consuevit sedes apostolica. (At the end: P. xx. Quarto Non. Septembris anno quarto. de Varris.) [2½ pp.]

Paul II dispensed him to receive and retain for life with the said church one other benefice, or without it any two other benefices, with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if two parish churches etc., or dignities etc. and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased. The pope now dispenses him (who obtained by canonical collation, and still holds along with the above-named church of Tackley, in virtue of the said dispensation, the chapel of Stoches sub Hamendon, called a provostship, in the diocese of Bath and Wells, which has cure, and in the foundation of which it is provided that its holder is bound to serve it continually, sleep in one dormitory along with the four priests who share the divine offices, and to wear indoors and out heel-long round cassocks of one and the same colour and price, with white cloaks, and a cross sewn on the left side and sewn above it the arms of the founder (fn. 5) ), to receive and retain for life with the said church of Tackley and the said chapel, or with other two incompatible benefices, any other third benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church etc., or a dignity, etc., and resign it, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, provided that of such three benefices not more than two be parish churches or perpetual vicarages; with indult for life to take the fruits of the said chapel whilst residing in one of his benefices or elsewhere, wear garments like other secular clerks, (fn. 6) and not be obliged against his will to reside in the said chapel. 7 Kal. Oct.
(25 Sept.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 322r.)
To the bishop of Mâcon (Matisconen.) and the dean and the official of York. Mandate, as below. The pope has learned that the priory of the place or maritime island of Guernessey, O.S.B., in the diocese of Coutances, has been so long void that its collation has lawfully lapsed to the apostolic see; that, as alleged by Thomas Preston, a canon of York, it was of old sufficiently endowed to the honour of God and St. Michael for masses etc. and for the habitation of religious, but is now, through the long wars between the English and French, in a state of ruin and without monks, and that its possessions have been for more than twenty years in the hands of laymen. The pope, therefore, out of consideration for Ferdinand, king of Sicily (Cicilie), who has petitioned on behalf of the said Thomas, hereby orders the above three to grant for life to the latter, the value of whose canonry and prebend of York does not exceed 100l. sterling, the said priory, which is only habitually (fn. 11) conventual, depends on the monastery of Mont Saint Michel, of the said order, in the diocese of Avranches, (fn. 12) and has been wont to be held by monks thereof, its prior being, as some allege, wont to be removed at the pleasure of the abbot of the said monastery, and its value not exceeding 100l. sterling. (fn. 13) They are to induct him, after receiving from him the usual oath of fealty according to the form enclosed. Nobilitas generis, etc. [2¾ pp.]
