To the abbots of Melros(e), Coupar (de Cupro), and Culros(e), in the diocese of St. Andrews and Dunblane. Letters conservatory for the abbot and convent of Paisley (de Pasleto), O. Clun., in the diocese of Glasgow, which depends on the monastery of Cluny in the diocese of Macon, immediately subject to the apostolic see. Militanti ecclesie. (In the margin: Fe.) [2½ pp.]
1483.
4 Kal. Jan.
(29 Dec.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 98r.)
To the bishop of Barcelona (Barchimonen.), (fn. 1) the abbot of Kyl[uy]nyng in the diocese of Glasgow, and the precentor of Segorbe (Sogobricen.). Mandate, at the recent petition of Patrick Massone, priest, of the diocese of Brechin (containing that on the voidance of the perpetual vicarage of Kilelane in the diocese of Glasgow by the death without the Roman court of John Hesting, the abbot and convent of Paisley, its ancient patrons, presented him to the dean and chapter of Glasgow, the see being then void, who have for some unknown reason refused to institute him) to collate and assign to him the said vicarage, value 9l. sterling. Vite etc. (In the margin: Jan.) [22/3 pp.]
1483[–4].
3 Id. Jan.
(11 Jan.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 105r.) (fn. 2)
To Thomas Macbryffyin, David Omury, and Thady Omugrayn, canons of Tuam. Mandate, as below. The pope has been informed by Malachy Ocluayn, priest, of the diocese of Clonfert, that Patrick Magrallayd, a canon of St. Mary's, Cluntuoscert Omane, O.S.A., in the said diocese, who holds in commendam by papal grant and dispensation the perpetual vicarage of Chyluayn in the same diocese, has when under sentence of excommunication celebrated mass and divine offices in contempt of the Keys, and has forged (fn. 3) apostolic letters, thereby contracting irregularity. The pope, therefore, hereby orders the above three, if Malachy will accuse Patrick before them (inasmuch as Malachy cannot safely meet Patrick within the city and diocese of Clonfert), to summon the latter, and if they find the foregoing to be true, to deprive him of the said commenda, and remove him from the said vicarage, and in that event to collate and assign the vicarage, value 3 marks sterling, to Malachy. Vite etc. (Gratis pro deo. Juravit. In the margin: Jan.) [3¼ pp.]

12 Sixtus IV.

1482[–3].
15 Kal. March.
(15 Feb.)
St. Peter's, Rome.
(f. 226v.)
Relaxation, as below. The pope has learned that Robert Chamberleyn, knight, lord of the place of Geddyng in the diocese of Norwich, has a great affection for the church of the monastery of Yxworth, O.S.A., in the said diocese, because Roger his father is buried therein, and because he intends to have therein the burialplace of himself, his mother Margaret and his wife Elizabeth. The pope, therefore, hereby grants to all who, being penitent and having confessed, visit the said church on the second Sunday of Lent and on the Nativity of St. Mary the Virgin, from the first vespers until sunset of the second vespers, (fn. 4) and give alms for the conservation of the buildings of the said church and for furnishing it with books, chalices and other ecclesiastical ornaments, and say the Lord's Prayer and an Ave for the soul of the said Roger, and for the souls of the said Robert, Margaret and Elizabeth after their death, and for their prosperity in this life, plenary remission of all their sins for ten years, beginning at the end of the indulgence which he lately granted in England after the manner of the indulgence of the Jubilee year, and, after the end of the said ten years, relaxation of two hundred years and as many quarantines of enjoined penance; with indult for the prior for the time being to appoint as many priests as convenient, secular or religious, to hear the confessions of such penitents on the said days and the two preceding days, grant them absolution, and enjoin penance, except in cases reserved to the apostolic see. The alms are to be put into a box with two keys, one kept by the collector of the papal Camera in England, or his deputy, and the other by the said prior, and are to be divided into three equal parts and assigned, one to the said collector and the other two to the said prior for the conservation of the said church. These presents are to hold good for the said ten years only, as regards a plenary indulgence, and in perpetuity, as regards such indulgence of two hundred years and as many quarantines, but they are to be null and void if any similar indulgence has been granted by the present pope in perpetuity or for a time not yet elapsed. Univ. ChristifidelilusSi populus Israeliticus. (Gratis de mandato sanctissimi domini nostri pape. In the margin: Jul.) [22/3 pp.]

Footnotes

  • 1. recte Barchinonen., if Barcelona be really intended, but there is, perhaps, an error for Brechinen. The usual practice was that only one of the three executors was a foreigner. A case in which two of the three are foreigners has, however, occurred recently, viz. Reg. Vat. devx, f. 269r., above, p. 108.
  • 2. On f. 205v. is a bull concerning a benefice in the diocese of Tréguier (Trecoren.), dated 3 Non. May (5 May), 1483, anno 12, and one of the three executors to whom it is addressed is the archdeacon of Richmond in the church of York.
  • 3. falsare non expavit.
  • 4. a primis vesperis usque ad occasum solis secundarum vesperarum eorundem dicrum.
