To Alan, cardinal priest of St. Praxed's, legate of the apostolic see to the realm of France and the other parts of the Gauls and parts adjacent thereto. (fn. 2) One of a long series of faculties and powers, extending from f. 1d to f. 47r, in connexion with the cardinal's mission to France to collect the papal tenth from the clergy and preach the crusade for the recovery of Constantinople; with extensions of the limits of his legation so as to include Flanders (f. 14), Brittany (f. 42) and Savoy etc. (ibid.). The first of the series, viz. Cum te ad regnum Francie, dated at St. Peter's, Rome, 1455[–6] 10 Kal. Feb. Confirmation, with exemplification, at the recent petition of the prior and convent of the Benedictine monastery or priory of the cathedral church of Coventry, of the following letters of William, then bishop of Coventry and Lichfield, appropriating thereto the parish church of Southam in the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield, value not exceeding 40l. sterling, which letters the pope has caused to be inspected in his chancery, and the tenour thereof to be appended, as follows, except only the seals and signs of authenticity, (fn. 4) namely:—
the letters ‘Universis sancte matris ecclesieEx parte venerabilium’ of William bishop of Coventry and Lichfield (dated in the principal chapel of his manor of Heywode, 15 July 1452. indiction 15, anno 6 Nicholas V., sealed with his seal and bearing the sign [manual] and subscription of Master William Brande, clerk, notary public, his scribe, witnessed by Master John Redhyll', I.U.B., canon of Lichfield, Sir Peter Bardeslay, chaplain, and others, and attested by the above William Brande, clerk, of the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield, notary etc. as above) setting forth the petition of Richard Notyngham, prior, and the convent of the above cathedral church, which relates that its fruits etc. are much diminished [on account of] the barrenness of its lands, the dearth of cultivators and servants, and their immoderate wages, and other misfortunes, and that they are greatly burdened by hospitality, and appropriating to them in perpetuity the said church, of their advowson and patronage, the appropriation to take effect, and the prior and convent to have licence to take possession of the said church, upon its voidance by the death or resignation or cession of William Sugge, the present rector, or in any other way, and a perpetual vicar to be instituted with a yearly portion of 12 marks sterling in money, to be paid quarterly, namely, at Christmas, Lady Day, St. John Baptist and Michaelmas, beginning on the first of the said feasts next after the admission of such vicar (fn. 5), and a manse for his habitation at the expense of the prior and convent; the bishop further reserving in perpetuity yearly pensions, to be paid at Michaelmas, of 2s. to himself and his successors and 20d. to the archdeacon of Coventry, and requiring the prior and convent to distribute yearly in perpetuity within a month after Lady Day 2s. to the poor. The bishop's letters exemplify:—
(a) the licence of Henry, king of England, granted by his letters patent witnessed by himself and dated at Westminster, 4 July anno 30 [1452, Cal. Pat. Rolls, 1446–1452, p. 564] and (b) the letters of procuration, sealed with their common seal and dated in their chapter-house at Coventry 20 April, 1452, of the above Richard Notyngham, prior of the cathedral church of St. Mary, Coventry, and its chapter or convent appointing Thomas Deram, monk and steward (seniscallus) of the said cathedral church, Master Thomas Lye, archdeacon of Salop, Master John Twysse, bachelor in laws, and Sir Robert Baguley, chaplain, to be their proctors for the matter of the said appropriation.

Mandate, at the recent petition of John Basok, a canon of Moray, bachelor in decrees (containing that although John bishop of Moray collated to him a canonry of that church by his ordinary authority, and although the chapter received him as a canon, assigning to him his stall in choir and place in chapter, etc., and although he has long served there in divine offices, yet, although several years have now elapsed, the said bishop, to whom belongs the entire disposal of prebends in the said church, has not yet made him provision of a prebend) seeing that he who has been received as a canon ought not to remain long without a prebend, to compel the said bishop or his successor, by ecclesiastical censure without appeal, as soon as an opportunity occurs, to make provision of a prebend to the said John, who has been official principal of Moray for more than nine years. To James Goldwell, rector of Heryettyshay (rectius Heryettysham, as in the text of the letter) in the diocese of Canterbury, doctor of laws. Dispensation, as below. Nicholas V dispensed him, who was commissary-general of the late John, [cardinal] bishop of St. Rufina's and by papal grant and dispensation ruling the church of Canterbury, (fn. 19) to receive and retain for life with the parish church of Chiriton in the diocese of Canterbury any one other, or without that church any two benefices, with cure [or otherwise] incompatible with one another, even if two parish churches or their perpetual vicarages or canonries and prebends and dignities etc.; after which, having resigned the said church, he obtained instead that of Heryettysham, value not exceeding 44l. sterling. which he at present holds. The pope hereby dispenses him to receive and retain for life with the said church of Heryettysham and any other incompatible benefice or, without the said church, with any two other incompatible benefices held by him now or in future in virtue of the said dispensation, any other third benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church or its perpetual vicarage or a dignity etc., and to resign them all, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleases, and hold instead three other incompatible benefices, even if three major or principal dignities, even with cure and elective, or such mixed, provided that they be not three parish churches or their perpetual vicarages.
