De Curia.
2 Pius II.
1459[–60]. 13 Kal. March. (18 Feb.) Siena. (f. 77d.) |
To Francis bishop of Terni (Interamnen.), the pope's nuncio and orator [and] collector of the apostolic see of the tenths of all ecclesiastics in the realms of England, Scotland and Ireland. Appointing him receiver, collector and exactor in the said realms of the tenth for one year of all ecclesiastical benefices imposed by the pope at Mantua with consent of the cardinals etc. for the preparation of a fleet against the Turks, as is contained more fully in the pope's letters on the subject; with mandate to betake himself in person to the said realms, and exact, levy and collect the said tenths from all benefices whatsoever, and also with faculty to do so, give acquittances, compel the disobedient by ecclesiastical censure and deprivation, appoint preachers in order to exhort the people to contribute to this sacred work, etc. Cum pro apparatu. (Marcellus. | B. de Reate.) [3⅓ pp. See above, Reg. Vat. CCCCLXXIV, f. 153. These bulls ‘Cum pro apparatu expedicionis maritime,’ given to the collectors in various realms charged with the collection of the ecclesiastical tenth in aid of the Crusade, occur passim in the ‘Vatican’ Registers. Thus Reg. Vat. CCCCLXXV, f. 37d. refers to one such bull registered in ‘libro vii. fo. cccvii’ i.e. Reg. Vat. CCCCLXXIV, f. 307. So also Reg. Vat. CCCCLXXVIII, f. 303r., refers to another in ‘libro vii. fo. cclvi,’ i.e. again Reg. Vat. CCCCLXXIV. Another example occurs in Reg. Vat. CCCCLXXVII, f. 80r. Cf. also Reg. Vat. CCCCLXX, f. 389, ‘Ad perpetuam rei memoriam. Licet ea que,’ about Calixtus III's commission to Alan, cardinal priest of St. Praxed's, to collect the tenth for a crusade in France.] |

1460. Kal. April. (1 April.) Siena. (f. 79.) |
To Francis bishop of Terni, nuncio of the apostolic see and the pope's orator with power of a legate de latere, and collector in the realms of England, Scotland and Ireland of tenths of ecclesiastics of those parts and of all oblations, whether for the crusade or arising in any other way for this sacred work. Appointing him, in addition to his recent appointment as collector of the tenth, as is contained more fully in other letters of the pope [see the preceding], collector, exactor and receiver of all moneys, goods and oblations howsoever arising for this sacred [work], with the necessary faculties, including faculty to appoint preachers in order to induce the faithful to contribute, such preachers to be entirely obedient to him. Cum te nuper. (Marcellus. | A. de Hirspaco.) [In the margin: de Curia. 1⅓ pp.] |
Ibid. (f. 79d.) |
To Francis bishop of Terni, the pope's nuncio and orator with power of a legate a latere, and collector in the realms of England, Scotland and Ireland of the tenths of all ecclesiastics of those parts. Faculty, as below. The pope lately at Mantua proclaimed a three years’ war against the Turks, and imposed a tenth of all ecclesiastical benefices for three years, as is more fully contained in certain letters of his drawn up on the subject and published in the session at Mantua. Seeing that on account of certain impediments the said letters have not yet been published [in the said parts] nor brought to the knowledge of the persons of those parts, (fn. 2) and considering also the wars and other calamities with which in times past the said parts of England, Scotland and Ireland have been disturbed and are at present afflicted, the pope grants faculty, if the nuncio do not see the possibility of doing otherwise, to impose in the said parts the said triennial imposition of tenths for one year, and reduce the three years to one, fix the term of payment of such year as the whole month of September next to come, prorogue the said three years if he think expedient, and do whatever else in the matter he knows to be expedient; the pope hereby decreeing that the censures and pains promulgated in the letters of the [said] tenths and in other letters of the pope shall not be binding except for the said one year and for the term of September or other, as it shall seem good to him to change, just as if the publication made at Mantua etc. had not been made as far as regards England, Scotland and Ireland. Cum pridem in dieta Mantuana. (Marcellus. | C. de Rinuciis.) [1¼ pp.] |
1459[–60]. 13 Kal. March. (18 Feb.) Siena. (f. 80d.) |

Cum pridem in dieta Mantuana. (Marcellus
| T. de Castello.) [In the margin: de Curia. ¾ p. Below the foregoing faculty is:— Idem habuit litteras Cruciate incipientes, ‘Ecclesiam Christi etc.’ Item litteras super decimis universaliter impositis, incipientes ‘Pugnatem [sic] contra Amalech etc.’ S. de Spada, C. Fidelis.] |

At the said petition, the pope hereby orders the above three, if they find the statements made therein to be true, to remove the said minister and friars, place them in other houses of the same order in the realm, suppress the said order in the said house, and unite and appropriate the said house, value with its annexes not exceeding 70l. sterling, to the said church and hospital in perpetuity, so that the rectors thereof may take possession of the said house etc., without requiring the licence [of the ordinary or] of any other, etc. Ad ea ex apostolice servitutis.
