Concurrent letters as above, f. 199d, mutatis mutandis, e.g. with ‘the suffragans of the church of Tuam’ instead of ‘the archbishop of Canterbury,’ and with the incipit ‘Hodie ecclesie Tuamensi.’ (P. and M. Amici. | P xxiiii. xii. xii. xii. xii. xii. xii. de Varris.) [3 pp. +.]

Footnotes

  • 1. On the back of the volume is the usual modern label, in Italian: ’Nicolo V. 1450. Anno 4. Lib. 3.’ A flyleaf has, in different contemporary hands, ‘R(ecipe) G., A.’ [de Feletis], ‘Tertius de beneficiis vacantibus et provisionibus prelatorum anno iiii,’ (i.e. ‘de exhibitis’ is omitted), and ‘E. Pele.’ A like contemporary description occurs also, as usual, on the bottom edge of the volume, but is almost illegible. The text embraces ff. 1–325.
  • 2. No surname.
  • 3. No surname.
  • 4. David Joy's orders are not expressed.
  • 5. The conourrent mandate has ‘per obitum quondam Jacobi Gordon.’
  • 6. There are two folios numbered ‘lxxxxii.’
  • 7. ‘mobilia,’ corrected to ‘inmobilia’ by the addition of ‘in’ in the margin by P. [de Varris].
  • 8. Patrick is not hereby dispensed on account of his defect of orders.
  • 9. His orders are not expressed.
  • 10. aut quondam Mileri seu Remundi Bremigham clericorum.
  • 11. The scribe had by force of habit written ‘presbytero.’ This is cancelled and over-written ‘P(ontanu)s,’ the word 'soluto’ being substituted in the margin by ‘P(ontanus).’
  • 12. Haruare is not hereby dispensed on account of defect of orders.
  • 13. In the date, ‘Fabriani Camerinensis diocesis’ is expunctuated by T. (i.e. T. de Tervisio), and ‘Rome apud Sanctum Petrum’ substituted in the margin.
  • 14. The words ‘dilectus filius Andreas Oharayn presbyter Darensis diocesis' are added in the margin by T. [de Tervisio].
  • 15. The oath clause does not occur in the two provisions which follow. Bishop Richard's translation is in Eubel, Hierarchia, ad loc., under the above date from the Obligationes, vol. 72, f. 43, where, however, it does not occur.
  • 16. mentioning the ‘city and diocese,’ as usual, although there was no ‘city’ of Meath. Edmund's provision is in Eubel, op. cit. under the above date, where he is described as ‘Edimundus Oschalk (Ouldhall), rector paroch. eccl. S. Patritii.’ Vol. 72 of the Obligationes, f. 43, to which Eubel refers, has, ‘Osdhalle,’ which is less remote than Eubel's ‘Oschalk’ from the ‘Oldhalle’ which it evidently represents.
  • 17. per eius patentes litteras suo sigillo munitas per proprium nuncium quantociens destinare procurct.
  • 18. Without the oath clause. For the above provision, which did not take effect, see also Eubel, Hierarchia, vol. II, p. 196, note 1 to ‘Lincolnien.,’ following the ‘Obligationes,’ vol. 72. f. 44.
  • 21. Brady, Episcopal Succession, vol. I (1876), p. 84, has under date 30 March, 1450 ‘nomine dni . Thome Knight, electi Assaven,’ from the ‘Obbligazioni.’ Eubel, op. cit, II (1901). p. 109, has ‘Thomas (Knight),' having probably taken the surname from Cams, rather than from Brady. Vol. 72 of the Obligationes, f. 40. which Eubel has also used, does not give the surname. The surname is also wanting in Le Neve-Harly, Fasti, I, p. 72.
  • 22. Without the oath clause.
  • 23. Either the ‘xxii.’ or the ‘x.’ is an error, probably the latter. Cf. f. 199d, which is also a translation. The above translation is in Eubel, ad loc. from ‘Obligationes,’ vol. 72, f. 40.
  • 24. centum et septuaginta unam(sic) cum dimidio florenorum auri de camera.
  • 25. i.e. the chancery evidently sent the 3 Id. May bulls later, so that they could not be registered in their proper place, namely, after the mandate to cardinal William.
  • 26. dicto Jacobo (rectius Donato) adhuc in humanis agente.
  • 27. The provision of Raymund is in Eubel, ad loc., from ‘Obligationes,’ vol. 72, f. 41.
  • 28. eam [electionem] a dilectis filiis dicti monasterii patre abbate primo, et consequenter a vicario generali dilecti filii abbatis Cistercian(sis) [sic] Dublinen(sis) diocesis partibus in illis existenti ordinaria auctoritate confirmari obtinuit. The text seems to be defective.
  • 31. Without the oath clause. The above provision is in Eubel, Hierarchia, ad loc., from ‘Obligationes,’ vol. 72, f. 44.
