Eugenius IV dispensed him, then holding [a canonry and] the prebend of Ruyton in the church of Lichfield and the parish church of Northerden' (rectius Northenden’) in the diocese of Coventry and Lichfield, to hold for life with the said church any benefice with cure or otherwise incompatible, even if a parish church etc., and to resign them, simply or for exchange, as often as he pleased, and hold instead two other incompatible benefices, even if two parish churches or perpetual vicarages, the said pope's letters stating that after taking the degree of bachelor of civil law (in legibus), he had studied civil law (in illis) for twelve years, and during that time publicly lectured. At his recent petition (containing that although at the date of the said letters he was a bachelor of civil law and had taken the said degree in the university of Oxford, he had not yet studied civil law for twelve years since taking the said degree, nor had he lectured, as stated), the pope hereby rehabilitates him. and decrees and grants that the said letters (by virtue of which he obtained, by collation of the ordinary, the deanery of St. John's, Chester, a dignity, in the said diocese, the said church of Northerden’ [sic] and a canonry and the prebend of Ruyton in the church of Lichfield, and, resigning the said prebend, that of Hondesacr(e) in the same church, and, resigning the said deanery, the parish church of Islepe in the diocese of Lincoln, and, resigning it, that of Bosworth in the same diocese, and, resigning the said church of Northerden’ [sic], that of Rolleston in the same diocese of Coventry and Lichfield. so that he, who is I.U.B., now holds a canonry of Lichfield and the said prebend of Hondesacr(e), and the said parish churches of Bosworth and Rolleston, the value of all not exceeding 70l. sterling) and their said consequences held and hold good from the date thereof, and that the said letters were and are not surreptitious on account of the said statement, etc. Litterarum etc. (Pe.de Noxeto. \| xxxvi. To the bishop of Salisbury, the abbot of St. Mary's, Glastonbury, in the diocese of Bath and Wells and John Cranborne, a canon of Salisbury. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Nicholas Carent, dean of Wells, licentiate in civil law (legibus), contained that he repeatedly requested Master Thomas Forest. clerk, of the diocese of Winchester, executor of the last will of the late John Forest. sometime dean and the immediate predecessor of the said Nicholas, to repair the manors, houses and possessions of the said deanery, but that the said Thomas refused, wherefore Nicholas brought him, not by papal delegation, before John Stokes, doctor of civil law (legum), auditor of the late John, archbishop of Canterbury, who by a definitive sentence condemned the said Thomas in 227l. sterling of the money of England for the said repair. from which sentence both parties appealed to the apostolic see; and that the pope, at Thomas's instance, committed his appeal to Master Bernard de Rouira, a papal chaplain and auditor. Seeing that, as the said petition added, the merits of the case could be better made clear in England (in partibus) than in the Roman court, the pope, at the petition of Henry and Margaret, king and queen of England, of which latter Nicholas is secretary, orders the above to summon the said Thomas and others concerned, resume the cause of the said appeal, hear it further, as well as the principal cause etc., and decide it, etc. Humilibus supplicum votis. 1452. 7 Kal. Aug. (26 July) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 204d.)	To John, cardinal bishop of St. Rufina's. Mandate and faculty, as below. The pope has recently learned that a number of faithful in England, instigated by the evil one, (fn. 2) have made unlawful conspiracies, attacks (insultus), conventicles and congregations against Henry, king of England and his estate, the peace and tranquillity of the realm, and archbishops, bishops and other persons, ecclesiastical and secular, within the said realm, wherefore some thereof have been put to death, wounded and despoiled of their goods. Seeing that some of the conspirators, slayers etc. are penitent and desire pardon and mercy from the apostolic see, the pope orders the above cardinal, who is also archbishop of Canterbury, either in person or by deputy to absolve in foro conscientie, with consent of the said king, all the said conspirators, slayers etc. (except those who did evil to archbishops or bishops), and their accomplices, if penitent, from their said evil-doing and from all their other sins, crimes, etc., even in cases reserved to the apostolic see, and from sentences etc., enjoining penance; to do likewise (except that here the clause de consensu prefati regis is omitted) in regard to all who conspired etc. and perpetrated evil against archbishops and bishops, and their accomplices; and to dispense priests and clerks who took part in the aforesaid, provided that they did not lay violent hands on persons thus slain, on account of irregularity contracted by celebrating mass etc., and rehabilitate them; with faculty hereby for the said cardinal and his deputy to execute these presents. 1452. 15 Kal. Sept. (18 Aug.) St. Peter's, Rome. (f. 219d.)	To Richard, bishop of Salisbury. (fn. 3) Grant, as below. The pope was gratified to hear recently that, the archdeaconry of Wilts (Wilteschirie) in Salisbury being at present void by the pope's promotion of John, [now] bishop of Lincoln to that see and his consecration, which has taken place by order of the pope without the Roman court, the above bishop Richard desired to grant it in commendam for life by his ordinary authority to Marinus de Ursinis, archbishop of Taranto, papal referendary, provided that, notwithstanding papal reservations, the bishop's right and power in regard to it should not be prejudiced upon its becoming void by the death of the said archbishop or in any other way. The pope therefore, in order that the right of the bishop and his successors to collate by their ordinary authority may not be impeded, grants hereby that on the approach of the said voidance he or his successor may, notwithstanding any papal reservations, special or general, freely make collation and provision as if the archdeaconry had not been collated or otherwise granted in commendam to the said archbishop, and as if no papal reservations had emanated interfering with such collation; the pope decreeing that the said archdeaconry is not reserved on account of such collation or commenda. Plenary remission of all their sins, to be valid for ten years only from the date of the publication of these presents, to penitents who on the feast of Pentecost or any one (aliquo) of the three days immediately following, from the first to the second vespers, visit the church, and give alms for the repair and conservation of the buildings, of the Augustinian monastery of St. Mary. Navan (de Nouane), in the diocese of Meath, which has been impoverished by wars etc.; with faculty that the present abbot and his successors may depute as many priests as they shall think good to hear the confessions during the said ten years, and grant absolution and enjoin penance; and decree that all who spoil pilgrims on their way to the said church, or plunder or burn their lands and possessions shall incur ipso facto the greater excommunication.
